Busy start to the weekend: where and when it can rain
The passage of a front this Saturday will cause a shower of showers and snow in the Pyrenees
BarcelonaThe weekend will start with a change in the weather. The passage of an Atlantic front today, Saturday, will cause a flurry of showers that will sweep across the country from west to east, although it will not rain all day or equally everywhere. Snow will also start to fall again in the Pyrenees with an initially very high altitude that will gradually decrease. Therefore, it will be a day to keep an eye on the sky and keep an umbrella nearby, but tomorrow, Sunday, calm will return. All of this with temperatures that are not very wintry.
Saturday, a round of showers
The first day of the weekend will be busy. The passage of an Atlantic front will cause a flurry of showers from west to east. During the early morning and into the early afternoon, 5 to 20 mm and some 5-10 cm of new snow fell in the Pyrenees (at the end of the information we added updated data on accumulated precipitation).
There will be a little or a lot of rain everywhere, although in several regions the rain will be weak and insignificant, especially in the southern half of the country. The most significant precipitation will affect the north of the Lleida regions in the morning, with drizzle or weak and scattered showers in the rest. And in the afternoon it will fall mainly in parts of the coast and the pre-coast of Barcelona, in Central Catalonia, the Girona regions and on the southern side of the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. In these areas, rainfall may exceed 10 or 20 l/m² in some cases, and some local, somewhat intense storms cannot be ruled out, which could accumulate up to 30 l/m², with hail. There will also be some scattered showers in the Valencian Country, and in the evening in the Balearic Islands.
Precipitation will fall in the Pyrenees throughout the day, initially in the western part and later arriving more strongly in the eastern part. The snow level will initially be very high, between 1,800 and 2,000 m, but it will go down and at dusk it will already be around 1,600 m, locally lower on the north face. No particularly significant snowfall is expected, but between 10 and 20 cm of new snow may accumulate at high altitudes, especially in the Alt Pirineu. Therefore, if you are going skiing, take chains or contact tyres just in case.
All of this with temperatures that will drop with colder temperatures in the Pyrenees, but will rise a little on the coast and in the pre-coast. Overall, we will continue with values that are not very wintery. The maximum temperatures will be between 14 ºC and 17 ºC, reaching 19 ºC in Terres de l'Ebre.
Until mid-morning, the southerly wind will blow in the Alt Empordà and in the peaks of the Pyrenees, but from the night onwards the Tramontana will blow in the Costa Brava, as well as a little mistral in the Ebro.
On Sunday, calmer
The front will quickly move away and Sunday will be a much calmer and more enjoyable day. In the early morning and into the early hours of the morning there may still be some light precipitation in parts of the Pyrenees, the northeast and the coast, but it will eventually move away. There will be some drizzle on the coast until midday, or even until mid-afternoon in the northeast. However, in the west of the country the day will be bright.
Temperatures will rise, after a colder morning inland. Maximum temperatures may reach 19 ºC in the Ebro, although it will feel colder early in the morning, due to the mistral wind, which will blow with some moderate gusts. The tramontana wind will blow more strongly in the Empordà, with a rougher sea to the north of the Begur cape.
In the Balearic Islands there will still be some showers, especially in the early morning and in the morning. Temperatures will rise and the weather will be mild for the time of year at midday, with northerly winds at the ends that will clearly diminish.
Weather changing next week
Next week, a couple more Atlantic fronts may arrive, bringing showers back to some regions and snow in the Pyrenees, with temperatures gradually falling. The windiest and wettest days will be Tuesday and the first part of Wednesday. The models indicate showers, especially on Tuesday, in the northern third of the country and also on the coast and pre-coast. On Wednesday morning, the last showers will fall in the north of the central coast and on the Costa Brava or in the northeast, with no large accumulations expected (5 to 10 mm, in general).
There are no major cold spells or significant rains in sight at the moment.
