The weather

Last day of showers today: a lull to begin the main event of Holy Week

Showers will still fall in some areas, but the sun will dominate on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

BarcelonaShowers and thunderstorms have continued to fall irregularly in many inland regions in recent hours. Particularly notable was the severe storm that hit the Molló area in Ripollès yesterday, Tuesday, where nearly 60 l/m² of precipitation accumulated throughout the day, along with significant hail that left everything as white as snow. This was by far the most notable rainfall record, while in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida and inland in the Ebro, local rainfall exceeded 20 l/m². Rain once again made an appearance in the West, where the region is experiencing an exceptionally wet spring, but today it looks as though the rain will be turned off in that area. And this Wednesday morning, the rain will mainly affect the northeast of the country.

The weather will remain unsettled today, Wednesday, with cooler temperatures, showers in some areas, northerly winds, and a snow level that will reach its lowest point in the Pyrenees. However, the sun will already be gaining ground in the south of the country with gusty winds, while we await a generally calm and sunny return on Good Thursday and Good Friday, with very pleasant middays. However, this will be short-lived, as instability will increase again heading into the weekend and the final stretch of Holy Week.

Wednesday: last day of showers

From early morning, showers and occasional thunderstorms have been falling irregularly in parts of the Girona and northern Barcelona regions, including the coast. This will be the pattern for the early morning in these areas, with scattered showers also occurring in other areas of the northern half, especially in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. The snow level will hover around 1,500 or 1,400 m, locally lower on the northern side of the Pyrenees, where precipitation will continue to fall throughout the day. Some showers will be locally heavy, so Meteocat is keeping some regions on alert:

In the afternoon, unstable conditions will continue in the regions of Barcelona, Girona, and the rest of the northern half of the country, with new showers and irregular storms. The most notable will affect central Catalonia and coastal and pre-coastal areas of Barcelona and southern Girona, although they will circulate quickly and move out to sea. However, in southern Catalonia and the Valencian Community, the sun will shine, especially thanks to the mistral and tramontana winds, which will strengthen at the extremes. Showers and storms are also expected in the Balearic Islands. Temperatures will generally drop and it will be cooler.

Two days of calm before new downpours

On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, sunshine and calm will prevail across the country, with virtually no risk of precipitation in general. Nights and mornings will be colder, but middays will be much more pleasant. On Thursday, the north wind will still blow at extreme temperatures, but it will eventually disappear by Friday.

However, we find ourselves in the midst of a very changeable and meteorologically varied Holy Week, a typically spring-like situation. Therefore, from Saturday onwards, instability will increase again, with new showers and storms in practically every region. Variability will dominate on Holy Sunday and Easter Monday, with traces of some showers in the north of the country. All of this will have to be followed very closely, as there is still room for the forecast to change.
