Winter morning and midday are milder and calmer, but new changes are in sight.
A coat is essential first thing in the morning and today the afternoon showers will be much less frequent, but from tomorrow onwards the instability will increase again.
BarcelonaDon't forget your coat this morning. Minimum temperatures have bottomed out, and it's winter-like, with values below average for early May. Even quite a few inland areas are reaching temperatures below 5°C. But maximum temperatures will rise, and the weather will be more pleasant than yesterday in the middle of the day. Today, most regions will be calm, with plenty of sunshine and less unstable conditions. There will only be a few light afternoon showers in the Pyrenees, the northeast, and Els Ports. This is nothing compared to yesterday's showers, which still left some light rain and over 20 l/m² in some areas of the northeast, and even less compared to Monday's strong and widespread thunderstorms. However, the variability and movement of the weather will continue in the coming days, and showers and thunderstorms will gain ground again between Thursday and Friday.
Wednesday: calmer
The residual showers that lingered from early morning have cleared, and Wednesday morning will be very calm and precipitation-free anywhere. Sunshine will dominate in many regions, although there will be cloudy spells in the Pyrenees and the northeast, as well as low clouds and morning fog in inland areas. The weather is cold, and it's important to dress warmly, as nighttime temperatures have bottomed out, with many lows of 10 to 13°C on the central and southern coast, below 10°C on the Costa Brava and the pre-coastal area, between 2 and 7°C inland, and lower in mountain areas, with values clearly lower.
However, highs will rise, and the weather will be milder in the middle of the day, with temperatures between 17 and 23°C in most cases. Sunshine will dominate in many areas, with afternoon clouds gathering only in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, the northeast, and Els Ports, which may bring a few scattered showers. This is hardly comparable to the strong storms of recent days. The Mestral and Tramuntana winds will be expected until midday in the Ebro and northern Empordà.
More showers starting Thursday
Between Thursday and Friday, instability will increase again. New showers and storms of a very erratic nature are expected, potentially falling almost anywhere. The various weather models are divided on the extent of the precipitation. It seems that the most likely areas would be central Catalonia, the pre-coastal region, Els Ports, Terres de l'Ebre, the Pyrenees, and the Pre-Pyrenees.
A typically spring-like variability, with a bit of everything, which we will have to factor in in future forecasts. This year, the saying "in May, a lightning bolt every day" is coming true. All this with temperatures that will remain similar or drop slightly on Thursday and are expected to fall further on Friday. The snow level will hover around 2,000 m.
Monday's storm report
The most significant showers and thunderstorms fell on Monday, the episode being quite extensive and intense. They began mid-morning and midday in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. As the hours passed, the rains reached the regions of Girona, Barcelona, Camp de Tarragona, and other points in the central and northern inland areas. In many cases, the storms were severe and accompanied by hail, small stones, and strong winds. Some downpours dumped more than 20 l/m² in just half an hour and caused some incidents, mainly due to flooding.
The city of Barcelona itself was hit by the severe storms in the evening, with more than 40 l/m² accumulated in the Raval neighborhood. In several areas along the pre-coastal area, rainfall exceeded 30 or 40 l/m², but the most notable were the violent storms that affected the northwest of Vallès Occidental, the north of Baix Llobregat, and nearby areas, which left up to 80 l/m² in Vacarisses and significant hail with small stones. These are the most notable data and images from this episode:
