Prince Frederik of Nassau, son of Luxembourg's prince, dies from a rare disease
The prince's son died on March 1 at the age of 22.

BarcelonaPrince Frederik of Nassau, son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg, passed away on March 1 in Paris after a long battle with POLG, a rare disease. The news was announced by his family this weekend through the POLG Foundation website, an organization that Frederik himself created to raise awareness and funds for research into this genetic disease.
"It is with great sadness that my wife and I wish to inform you of the death of our son, the founder and creative director of the POLG Foundation: Frederik," began the statement written by the Prince of Luxembourg. Frederik was diagnosed when he was 14 years old with POLG, a pathology that causes a progressive deterioration of the organs and affects the ability to produce protein and generate energy. To alleviate its effects, the prince's son had moved to Paris years ago to receive specialized treatment. Coincidentally, the son of Robert of Luxembourg and Julie Ongaro died the day after the International Day of Rare Diseases, celebrated on February 28.
"Frederik found the strength and courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn: his brother, Alexander; his sister, Charlotte; me [Prince Robert of Luxembourg]; his three cousins, Charly, Louis and Donall; his brother-in-law, Mansour; saying everything he heard to his extraordinary mother, who has not left his side for the past 15 years," said the emotional statement posted on the foundation's website.
