Spanish tourist seriously injured after being stabbed at Berlin Holocaust Memorial

BerlinA 30-year-old Spanish tourist was seriously injured in a stabbing attack by an unknown person at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin on Friday afternoon, German media reported, citing police sources.

Police confirmed via social media that they had arrested the alleged attacker, who had "visible blood stains." According to the newspaper Tagesspiegel, the detainee had blood on his hands and returned to the scene of the attack after fleeing. His identity and motivations are currently unknown.

At around 6:00 p.m., a man attacked the Spanish tourist with a knife in the field of steles at the Holocaust Memorial, for reasons that are unknown. The injured man was taken to a nearby hospital. According to the police, Tagesspiegel, the injuries are serious, but his life is not in danger

The attack occurred on the eve of the general elections on February 23 in Germany and in the middle of the Berlinale, the international film festival in Berlin. The Berlinale, which ends this Sunday, takes place in Potsdamer Platz, 700 meters from the place where the attack took place.

The Memorial to the Murders of Europe, which is made up of 2,710 gray concrete steles of different heights, is located next to the Brandenburg Gate and the United States Embassy in Germany. It is not yet clear whether the attack has any connection with the Holocaust Memorial or with the diplomatic delegation.
