BarcelonaJapanese automaker Nissan plans to lay off approximately 10,000 workers, in addition to those already announced as part of its restructuring process, which will entail a reduction of approximately 20,000 employees or around 15% of its global workforce, according to a report on Monday by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Asked by Efe about the veracity of this information, the automaker declined to comment, claiming that it was not an official announcement.

Nissan is experiencing a serious financial slump, which led it to announce in November of last year the layoff of 9,000 employees and a global production cut of approximately 20%. Its financial difficulties have been accentuated by the aggressive tariff policy of US President Donald Trump, who has implemented a 25% increase in taxes on foreign vehicle imports. Thus, tariffs on Japanese imports from the sector now stand at 27.5%.

Japanese manufacturers have one of their largest markets in the United States and often export from neighboring countries. This information about the new layoffs Nissan is considering comes just one day before the automaker presents its financial report for its latest fiscal year, which ended on March 31.

The company has announced that it estimates it will record net losses of between 700 and 750 billion yen (between €4.25 and €4.56 billion) this fiscal year, due to costs related to the restructuring plan and other factors. As part of this process, Nissan has also announced the cessation of its production in Argentina, with the consolidation of its pickup trucks in Mexico. In addition, it will also scrap its plan to build a new electric vehicle battery factory in the Japanese city of Kitakyushu, in the southwest of the archipelago.
