Naturgy partners with ID Energy Group to invest €500 million in biomethane plants.

The planned production is equivalent to the energy consumption of 320,000 homes.

BarcelonaThe energy company Naturgy has signed a major alliance with ID Energy Group for the development of 20 new biomethane plants in Spain, the company chaired by Francisco Reynés announced this Wednesday. The agreement is a demonstration of the Catalan group's "firm commitment" to leading the promotion of renewable gases as a strategic vector to accelerate the energy transition.

The alliance represents a planned investment of more than €500 million. The projects included in the agreement will have an estimated production capacity of 1,600 GWh per year, enabling the decarbonization of the equivalent of the consumption of 320,000 homes and significantly contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions in Spain. The plants will be spread across different locations in Spain and will be operational between 2026 and 2028.

Through this agreement, Naturgy and ID Energy Group consolidate their role as leaders in the renewable energy sector and promote a more sustainable and circular economy. The production of this green gas from waste will not only contribute to reducing emissions, but also to energy independence, the generation of biofertilizers, and the optimization of available resources, Naturgy said in a statement.

"This alliance accelerates the development of biomethane in Spain," said José Luis Gil, director of renewable gases at Naturgy, who highlighted ID Energy Group's experience in renewable gases in other European countries. For his part, Julio Espadas, director of ID Energy Group, emphasized that "having an industrial partner of the stature of Naturgy represents a great opportunity" for its expansion "thanks to its experience and leadership in the energy sector, with a solid track record in the renewable energy and green gas markets."
