Karla Sofía Gascón reappears to receive an award: "I am a woman like any other, sometimes a bit of an idiot"

The actress receives the award from the Union of Actors and Actresses of Spain for best actress in an international production

BarcelonaThe Union of Actors and Actresses of Spain awarded Karla Sofía Gascón this Monday as best actress in an international production for her work in Emilia Perez. It is the first award that the actress receives after the controversy caused by racist tweets which were made public a few weeks before the Oscar nominations, and which destroyed her image among many of the voters of the Hollywood Academy.

"I am not a robot, I am an actress, a woman like any other, with my virtues and defects, sometimes a bit of an imbecile, and I have a wonderful daughter to whom I want to leave a better world," explained Gascón upon receiving the award during the ceremony held at the Circo Price in Madrid. "I wanted to be an example of overcoming. I am sorry I could not be that way I wanted, but I will continue fighting and working because I want my job."

In her speech, Gascón also recalled the words of an Oscar-winning actress, Jamie Lee Curtis, who denounced hatred against her daughter for being trans. "Any excuse is good enough to attack us: five years ago I was doing microtheater performances for one person and they didn't stop insulting me, and a week ago, at the Oscars, some would have liked to burn me, like in the Inquisition," she added.

During the gala, the actress claimed to be a fan of Star Wars and she said that she has always fought against "the dark side," and "even against the dark side of myself." And she closed her speech with these words: "May the force be with us in all the dark moments that we have left to live, and starting with ourselves, with that dark side that we carry within: more love and less hate."

The actress had already broken his silence a day earlier, when the magazine The Hollywood Reporter Gascón published a statement in which he reflected on the controversy over his racist tweets and said that "things escalated to the point, and so quickly, that I couldn't even breathe." "In the midst of this unexpected and devastating storm, the pain has been so overwhelming that at times I contemplated the unthinkable," he confessed.

Among the other winners of the Spanish actors and actresses gala are also Javier Bardem, Candela Peña, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Eduard Fernández, Carlos Cuevas, Clara Segura and Carolina Yuste. Throughout the night, the winners took the opportunity to make protest speeches against sexist violence, military spending in Spain and Israel's war against Palestine.
