Chufo Lloréns, author of 'I Will Give You the Land,' dies at 94.
Of his works, more than a million copies were sold worldwide.
BarcelonaThe Barcelona writer Chufo Lloréns, the author of historical novels that have been bestsellers such as I will give you the landandSea of fire, has died at the age of 94, according to Grijalbo publishing house, part of the Penguin Random House group. Passionate about history, Lloréns began his literary career in the 1980s with titles such as Catalina, the fugitive from San Benito,The other leprosyandThe Saga of the Damned. But his greatest sales achievements, both here and internationally, were I will give you the land(2008) andSea of fire(2011), both set in medieval Barcelona. They were translated in a dozen countries, and their works sold more than a million copies worldwide.
After this medieval diptych, Lloréns delved into modernist Barcelona with the voluminousThe law of the just(2015) and, five years later, publishedThe destiny of heroes, where he offered a vision of the first decades of the 20th century and the great conflicts that took place in Europe and Spain. His penultimate published novel wasThe life that separates us, with which he traveled to the beginnings of Spanish democracy through a woman, from a late Franco society to one with greater freedoms. Nothing happens on the eve, published last November. It's a choral novel of love and betrayal in late-Franco Barcelona, running to more than 450 pages. He acknowledged then that his age no longer permitted him to write more: "I'm excited to say goodbye to the readers, who have supported me so much and so well, with this story dedicated to Barcelona, the city that has been the setting for my life and my work."
Born in Barcelona in 1931, Lloréns studied law, but his professional career took place in the entertainment world, where he was an actor, comedian, and showman. Later, in 1959, he worked as a promoter and representative of artists and as a producer of shows. In the entertainment world, he collaborated with Chunga, Pedro Ruiz, Moncho Borrajo, Julio Iglesias, Raphael, Lora Flores, Charles Aznavour, Patti Bravo and Sacha Distel, in addition to being the owner and director of the nightclubs El Papagayo and Don Chufo, and became vice president of the Federation.
