Who would dare to assault a journalist for 160 euros?
The far right's growing lack of inhibition also extends to the use of physical violence against dissenting voices. Eldiario.es published a report on threats against journalists and media workers following Héctor de Miguel's resignation due to the threats he received. The qualitative shift in this deteriorating climate is that we are no longer talking about the classic anonymous and cowardly profile that posts unsettling messages: the classic "watch out," "when you least expect it..." or that posts your personal address online. Easily identifiable individuals are now openly suggesting that they will go and beat up those they consider a nuisance. The publication cites the case of a man named Alberto Gonzalo de Juan, who calls himself Pugilato (Pugil), and who some time ago attacked a comic book. In one of his videos, a hooded militant from the far-right organization Núcleo Nacional asks him: "How much does applause cost?" And he replies: "It's not expensive, is it? Between 160 and 500 euros, it depends. But, come on, it's not outrageous." Immediately afterward, the other one says that there are many unemployed young people who "would be delighted to find a job with certain characteristics." Other similar messages from far-right groups talk about "dropping by to say hello" and other euphemisms like "applauding" to refer to beating someone up, but without saying it explicitly, presumably to avoid the legal consequences of an open threat.
Shameful role of the networks and platforms that allow these calls to violence. And shameful role of the police, if they don't act immediately against those who incite violence from these platforms, hoping that some enlightened individual will feel compelled to act. Let's ask ourselves why this apathy exists, if we're going to do something. And a hug, Hector.
