What does the future of video games hold?
Without the mythical E3 fair, the sector fragments into digital events that announce the most anticipated news and mark a relentless calendar
God of war Laufey, Final fantasy VII revelation, Gears of war: E-day or The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time remake. The June video game presentations leave no one indifferent, and despite the industry shaking, the future release calendar does not stop and brings titles for all tastes and ages. Beyond new details and updates, let's review the great video games that will arrive in the coming months or even years.
State of Play
Sony's event was the first to open fire and presented the next big exclusive games for its PlayStation 5 console.
‘God of war Laufey’
(2018).
‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ (‘Marvel’s Wolverine’)God of war (2018).
'Marvel's Wolverine' ('Marvel's Wolverine')
Insomniac's new title arrives this September, and it is one of PlayStation's big bets of the year after Saros. At the presentation, its gameplay and extremely bloody and explicit combat, which has earned it an 18+ rating, were shown in more detail.
‘Until Dawn 2’
Facing 2027, a new installment of this thriller cinematic format will arrive from Firesprite. The sequel will transport players to a tropical island and put them back on the ropes with life-or-death decisions.
- September crunch The start of the school year is oversaturated with major releases like Silent Hill: Townfall (September 24th), Remedy's highly anticipated Control Resonant (September 24th), or the action of Onimusha: Way of the Sword (September 25th). The density of new releases is a clear symptom of the shockwave generated by the arrival of GTA VI in November: everyone wants to avoid the titan to be relevant in the market, but competition will be very tough nonetheless.
- The second wave of autumn The event confirmed the arrival of more titles such as Rayman Legends Retold (October 1st), the martial arts of Phantom Blade Zero (delayed to October 29th), and the RPG from the creators of the Ori saga, with No Rest for the Wicked confirming the release of version 1.0 on PS5 and PC during October.
- Long-term promises The presentation highlighted the return of Lara Croft's first adventure with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 2027), or other titles without a specific date such as the cooperative action of Kemuri, the aerial simulation of Ace Combat 8, the visceral horror of ILL, the imposing dinosaurs of The Lost Wild, or the charismatic prequel Bancho the Chef.
Summer Game Fest
The show of presenter Geoff Keighley, creator of The Game Awards, is one of the highlights and concentrates the main multiplatform news.
‘Final fantasy VII revelation’
The grand closing of the event was the confirmation of the third and final part of the trilogy of this ambitious remake. But the big news is that Square Enix is breaking its exclusivity with Sony and the new Revelation will have a simultaneous launch on all current platforms, which will also arrive in the spring of 2027. The second installment has landed a few days ago on Xbox and Switch 2.
‘Resident evil Veronica’
The show opened with one of the most anticipated titles by horror fans. After years of rumors, Capcom has officially announced the release of the complete remake of Code: Veronica, the classic that debuted on Dreamcast in 2000. The new title will receive the same technical and graphical improvements as the company's previous remakes and will be released in 2027.
‘TMNT: The last ronin’
The proposal is noteworthy as it is Paramount's first major project in the video game world, which, moreover, promises to break away from the usual childish tone of the Ninja Turtles to offer a grittier and more spectacular combat. Furthermore, PlatinumGames, developers of great action titles such as Bayonetta,NieR: Automata or Ninja Gaiden 4, will be in charge of adapting the dark and acclaimed comic.
- Confirmations for this summer Not everything is late and settled between September and October, the 1.0 version of the phenomenon Palworld arrives on July 10, the strategy of Star Wars: Zero Company, on August 27 and The Blood of Dawnwalker, the new project from some of the creators of The Witcher 3, on September 3.
- The return of great authors The return of great creators such as Fumito Ueda (Shadow of the Colossus) with the science fiction of gen Atlas, or the dark action of 1666 Amsterdam, the new game by Patrice Désilets, creator of Assassin's Creed, stands out.
- Unexpected major sequels Many games announced the arrival of a sequel, some of them expected, but many were big surprises for the public. Alien: Isolation 2, Guild Wars 3, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, The Wolf Among Us 2 and Mighty Cuphead Adventure have been confirmed.
- Future major international titles Stranger Than Heaven confirms its arrival in January while the new Virtua Fighter Crossroads aims for 2027 without specifics. Also noteworthy is Blood Message, a new Chinese superproduction with impressive graphics, or the interesting CrossFire, a single-player game from some ex-developers of Call of Duty.
Xbox Games Showcase
Players have welcomed the new director's first Showcase with great enthusiasm, Asha Sharma, who replaced Phil Spencer this February. Microsoft surprised the public with many juicy innovations, future exclusives, and an expansion of the Game Pass catalog. It's a shame that, a few days later, the reality of the industry has taken over and an imminent restructuring of the Xbox universe is already on everyone's lips. Sadly, the company's internal plans seem to point to the closure or sale of key studios like Ninja Theory (Hellblade), Double Fine (Psychonauts) or Compulsion Games (South of midnight).
‘Gears of War: E-day’
One of Microsoft's great sagas returns to its roots with a prequel that narrates the first day of the Locust invasion through the eyes of a young Marcus Fenix. The title will arrive on October 6 for Xbox Series and PC as well as the Game Pass service, and will avoid the launch on PlayStation 5 after rethinking its exclusivity strategy with first party.
‘Spyro: A realm beyond’
After years of silence, the most famous purple dragon in video games will star in a completely new adventure developed by Toys for Bob, which was responsible for the remake of the original trilogy. The big novelty of this installment, scheduled for spring 2027, is that for the first time it will be set in an open world where you can fly with total freedom.
‘Persona 6’
Atlus's future plans have finally been made official. The new numbered installment of the award-winning Japanese role-playing saga is confirmed with a subtle trailer, but one that hinted at a more terrifying atmosphere. The studio also took the opportunity to announce that the remake Persona 4 revival will be released on February 18. To the delight of Microsoft users, both will be available from day one on Game Pass.
- Els llançaments clau més immediats Among the confirmed upcoming dates are the nostalgic Halo: Campaign Evolved on July 28; the action-packed Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, arriving on August 27; and Konami, which revives classic platforms with Castlevania: Belmont's Curse on October 15.
- Més exclusius i maquinari translúcid Microsoft wants players to remain rooted to their console, which is why it confirms new exclusives for 2027 such as the steampunk RPG Clockwork Revolution or the reboot of Fable, which is finally confirmed for February. On the other hand, this November the Xbox Series X25 edition will go on sale, a translucent green console that pays tribute to the brand's 25 years.
- El múscul del Game Pass The subscription service lowered its price this April and continues to expand its catalog and offer many new releases from day one. New titles were confirmed to be heading there, such as the sequel Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember or the indie humor of Bad Magpie. Free expansions for titles already available are also arriving, such as Age of Empires IV or the brutal Doom: The Dark Ages.
- Retorns de culte per al 2027 The show served as a showcase for the return of one of SEGA's most wacky and beloved games, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, directed by its original creator Kenji Kanno. The new project from Ninja Theory was also announced, simply titled Senua, which promises to enhance combat with a new adventure within the universe of Hellblade.
Nintendo Direct
In the presentation event for future titles, the company has revealed big surprises, but above all confirms the expansion of the catalog for the Nintendo Switch 2 console, which has just celebrated its first year.
‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake’
Nintendo's best-kept (or not) secret and a very good closing for the presentation. The absolute classic from Nintendo 64, considered one of the best games in history, will return completely reimagined from scratch and exclusively for the Switch 2 console in 2026. Although the first glimpse only showed a moment of young Link sleeping in his cabin, the official confirmation has revolutionized social media.
‘Kingdom Hearts IV’
One of the big surprises of the show, which arrives after years of silence from Square Enix. The fourth numbered installment of the saga that mixes Japanese-style action and characters from the Disney universe has shown a trailer and confirmed its simultaneous release on all current platforms. In addition, for those who want to catch up, a compilation with the entire updated saga will be published this October.
‘Xenoblade genesis’
Monolith Soft did not want to miss the appointment and made official the future of its science fiction role-playing franchise. Under the title of Genesis, this new installment marks a new beginning for the Xenoblade saga, which aims to become one of the great exclusives for Switch 2 next year. The studio takes the opportunity to release a refined version of the original trilogy that not only arrives with technical improvements, but also includes more content. Furthermore, the definitive edition of the first installment is already available in digital format and the following ones will arrive in the coming months.
- Summer's fireworks The brand's most immediate news is sustained by the imminent Star Fox, which has released a free demo before its release on June 25. It will be followed by the lighthearted Rhythm Paradise Groove (July 2) and the chaotic Splatoon Raiders (July 23). Later on, the successful Pokémon Pokopia will premiere in August the first of three confirmed expansions, set in the seabed.
- More exclusives to round off 2026 Notable is FromSoftware's mysterious multiplayer project, The Duskbloods, which for now remains exclusive for 2026. Other important titles with defined dates also draw attention, such as the co-op Orbitals (September 3), the tactical Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (September 17), or the nostalgic return of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort (October 22).
- The power of Switch 2 on trial The console's catalog continues to receive more games with high graphic requirements, both ports of old titles and future releases. Confirmed at the Direct were: Space Marine 2, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Stellar Blade, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, Lies of P, Devil May Cry 5, or the new Onimusha, among others.
