‘Marvel: Wolverine’, Insomniac’s most adult and visceral video game

Insomniac Games, one of the flagship studios of PlayStation Studios, leaves behind the successful Spider-Man saga and bets on a new hero from the Marvel comics universe. The shift in tone towards a much darker, adult and visceral title is remarkable, since its creators are also responsible for family-friendly and iconic sagas like Spyro or the charismatic Ratchet & Clank. Marvel: Wolverine, the official name of the game Marvel’s Wolverine in Spain, arrives as this year's big exclusive for the PlayStation 5 console (with the permission of Saros).

The new video game is a blockbuster that presents a linear adventure packed with action and an intense plot starring Logan, one of the most beloved mutants in the Marvel universe. The philosophy behind this proposal is to convey a much rawer and more mature atmosphere, and to explore the wild nature and the past of its protagonist. The game aims to keep its feet on the ground (at least more so than with the charismatic Spider-Man) and explore the fiercest side of superheroes, so that the player feels more immersion in the action through a minimal interface and more explicit violence.

The return of Logan and the mutants

Marvel: Wolverine is not a story about the antihero's origin, but rather tells an original story centered on the struggle for mutant survival. In this world, the X-Men do not exist and the mutant race is persecuted to the point of reaching the brink of extinction. In this tense situation, Logan, who had been retired for three years, is forced to return to action and team up with other great names from the Marvel universe to confront the extermination plan of the scientist Bolivar Trask.

The person responsible for bringing the protagonist of this title to life is Liam McIntyre, who takes over from Hugh Jackman on the big screen to endow this new Wolverine with feelings and rage. As an emotional counterbalance, actress Krizia Bajos plays Jean Grey, known as Phoenix for being one of the strongest mutants in existence, who will play an important role in the plot as the leader of the resistance. On the other hand, the entities that threaten the antihero and his group include high-profile names such as Lady Deathstrike or Omega Red, among other surprises that will delight the biggest fans of the comics.

Regarding the game structure, the proposal avoids the open world of the Spider-Man saga, which invited the player to explore the city of New York freely, to better define the pace of an adventure that becomes a journey around the planet. The different levels take Logan and company through very diverse environments such as Japan, Canada, or the dangerous island of Madripoor. Apart from the environment itself, the playable sections are also varied, with infiltration moments that invite stealth, high-speed motorcycle chases on the road, or major confrontations with more cinematic shots. Overall, the adventure offers a frantic experience that can last between fifteen and twenty hours.

Fierce combat and 'adamantium' claws

The game's combat system is dynamic and aggressive, inviting the player to feel the fury that Wolverine experiences on the battlefield. Not only in the combat mechanics themselves, but also with the features of the DualSense controller, the game conveys the impact of every hit and every slash. His regeneration ability is also a key feature, as Logan will also be wounded in these confrontations. His body will be visibly shredded and covered in blood, and he will have to channel his energy to heal in real time and survive the most critical moments. All of this makes for a very explicit and raw visual spectacle, closer to the nature of the new protagonist and the adult tone of the proposal.

His mutant senses also make an appearance, such as his sense of smell, which has already sparked controversy on social media. A very visible scent trail leads Wolverine to certain objectives he decides to follow, an aid that many players criticize for being too paternalistic and trivializing part of the gameplay. One of the game's directors has already come to the defense of the mechanic, saying that it is not always active and that they introduced it to provide more fidelity to the character. It should be noted that there are even more features available to make the game more accessible, a practice that, if optional, allows a title to reach a wider audience without damaging the design and original vision of the developers.

A turning point for Insomniac and Sony

In the technical field, as is usual in PlayStation Studios superproductions, the game makes the most of its hardware and offers a visual and performance solidity that does not decline even during the most intense action sequences. The sound section also reflects this attention to detail with a dynamic soundtrack by David Fleming, with compositions that react in real time to the intensity of the action.

With this new title, Insomniac Games not only publishes its first game for adults in many years, but it also demonstrates its versatility in tackling darker and more complex stories. Even so, the initial reviews from the specialized press, while not excessively bad, left the new Marvel: Wolverine below the level of its recent games. Perhaps Insomniac has not achieved its goal, or perhaps there are also collateral damages arising from the controversy over Sony's abandonment of the physical format by 2028. It remains to be seen if this combination of mature narrative and explicit violence will manage to convince the general public, in what will be a decisive year for the future of the Japanese company.
