GironaAnyone living or visiting the Girona region this weekend who goes to the newsstand to buy the newspaper this Sunday, July 20th, will find a very special gift. Together with ARA, they will receive the second edition of the magazine for free. The Promotion, 116 pages of Catalan culture, language, and gastronomy. This is a publication edited in Girona by the El Foment Cultural Foundation, which has its base of operations with different spaces in the heart of the Barri Vell, but which wants to go much further and be a "tool to reconnect the entire Catalan linguistic sphere", in the words of the director, Andreu Mas.

The magazine is one more piece of the set of initiatives promoted since 2020 by the Girona businessman, activist and philanthropist Candi Granés and which have the Mercaders Square in Girona as a meeting point for two gastronomic projects, the Fonda and the Taverna, and two spaces dedicated to language and culture, the School and the Center. But it goes much further. "One of the priorities of the El Foment Cultural Foundation since its inception is to create a network with other entities, companies, and institutions in the Catalan language field. Distribute the magazine The Fomen"Together with the ARA in the Girona region, this is a logical step in this desire for collaboration, which should allow us to consolidate our project to strengthen and promote Catalan culture, language, and gastronomy," says Granés.

The pioneer of musicals in Catalan, Àngels Gonyalons, is the protagonist of the cover of the magazineThe Promotion, which includes a new supplement dedicated to popular and traditional culture with an extensive report on the similarities between glossa battles and rap in Catalan. Continuing along the musical lines, the magazine also includes an extensive interview with David Carabén of Mishima, while in the field of language, linguist and journalist Enric Duran compiles a list of the more than one hundred different Catalan names for amapola, gallo, or quiquiriquico in the Girona region.

Unpublished Reports

The magazine also includes unpublished reports and shows us the cabin that Alexandre Deulofeu built on his farm in Ordis with the remains of wood from his house in Figueres bombed by the fascist air force and from where he wrote the Mathematics of history. It also reviews the evolution of stand-up comedy in Spain since Joan Capri and details the career of Valencian singer Maria Juan. Finally, in the voices section, the magazine prioritizes female voices, and you can read an article by ARA journalist and Girona delegate Mariona Ferrer, in which she asks, "Why is there more modernity in villages than in cities?"
