When is sex resumed after childbirth?

It is one of the most common questions regarding sexuality at a given moment in life. And also one that generates the most pressure. When can we have relations again? As if there were a specific day on the calendar when the body would lift the blinds and say: "That's it, everything is back to how it was before."

For years, the famous quarantine has been repeated. Six weeks and done. But the body does not work with administrative deadlines. Some people recover physically sooner, and others need many months. And all of them are normal.

After childbirth, there are wounds that heal, hormones that change, possible discomforts, vaginal dryness, and a pelvic floor that often needs time and care, everything has moved out of place. All of this, obviously, influences sexuality. But there is something even more important: suddenly, life has changed completely. Our priority ceases to be ourselves to become a small, absolutely dependent, and vulnerable being. The brain is focused on caring, feeding, protecting, and ensuring its survival. In this context, it is quite logical that sex does not occupy the top spots on the list.

And this does not mean that the couple disappears. It means that intimacy needs to find new paths. A hug, a moment of conversation, a kiss without rushing, or sharing affection are also sexuality. Because sexuality goes far beyond having sex.

Perhaps the question is not "when is it time to have sex again?", but "when do I feel again that this body is also mine?". It is not about recovering the sexual life of before, but about building a new one, adapted to the life stage one is living. Without rushing, without expectations, and without guilt. The postpartum period not only transforms the body; it transforms the order of priorities.
