At least ten people died Tuesday at a high school in Canada after a person opened fire inside the building in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, according to the EFE news agency, citing police sources. Among the dead was the suspected shooter, who committed suicide, police said. Authorities have identified the shooter as an 18-year-old woman with mental health issues, but have not released details about a possible motive. Officers arrived at the school two minutes after receiving an alert, at 1:20 p.m. (local time), and found six people dead inside. Two more bodies were found at a nearby residence in an incident that appears to be related to the shooting. Another person died while being transported to a hospital.

As a result of the shooting, approximately 25 people were injured and are being treated at the local medical center, while two others were airlifted to hospitals due to the severity of their injuries. No details about the victims have been released to protect their privacy, and no further information has been given about the attacker other than that she reportedly committed suicide after the shooting. Some media outlets describe her as "a woman in a suit with dark hair."

Images circulating on social media showed students leaving the school with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter circled overhead. Thousands of people were ordered to shelter in place after police issued an active shooter alert for the rural community and surrounding areas.

"As part of the initial response to the active shooter, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located several victims. A person believed to be the shooter was also found dead, and it appears to be a self-inflicted injury," said Poli. The town has 2,400 inhabitants.
