The administration of President Donald Trump plans to deliver 40,000 bombs of 900 kilograms in exchange for 2.8 billion dollars. The shipment includes some of the most destructive bombs in Western arsenals: about 20,000 MK-84 and BLU-117 bombs and another 20,000 I-2000 bombs, according to information reported by the Washington Post.All ammunition is intended to be launched from the air. However, the MK-84 and BLU-117 bombs have a general purpose, while the I-2000s are designed to attack bunkers and other armored structures. This type of ammunition already caused concern in 2024 for former President Joe Biden for fear that Israel would use it in a large-scale offensive in Rafah that would cause numerous civilian casualties. This led the former US president to suspend the shipment.

Now, despite the fact that Israel continues attacks on Palestinian territory despite the ceasefire, Trump is committed to pushing forward with the operation with the aim of strengthening Israeli military capabilities. In January, the US president had already approved a new series of arms sales to Israel for 6.67 billion dollars. Some transactions have also been marked by controversy due to the use of procedures such as the emergency one to bypass Congressional review, as was the case last year with a 3 billion euro sale that included more than 35,500 bombs.

In this case, Congress has already been informally notified about the agreement, according to the same reports, which specify that the sale will be paid for with what Washington calls foreign military financing. Under this procedure, the United States gives money to Israel so that it can then buy weapons from the North American country.

The operation shows that, although the relationship between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is more strained due to the war in Iran, military cooperation between the United States and Israel has not weakened. Furthermore, the new chapter in US military support for Israel comes at a complicated time for the country's armed forces, marked by the shortage of ammunition due to the war with Iran. Washington faces difficulties in recovering its own ammunition reserves after the high usage during the war in Iran.
