LondonThere is no peace or oblivion for Prince Andrew. The police have expanded their investigation in recent weeks to cover a wide range of possible crimes, including inappropriate sexual conduct, corruption, and misuse of confidential information.

The revelation, which The TimesAndreu was arrested on his 66th birthdayAndrew was arrested on his 66th birthday and has since remained under investigation on suspicion of leaking confidential information from the British government to the financier and confessed pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Sources close to the investigation clearly point to Andrew's central role in the case.

The Thames Valley Police also considers that some of the facts being investigated could fit within the definition of the crime of "misconduct in public office", a complex criminal offense, specific to Anglo-Saxon law, and far-reaching, which can carry very high prison sentences.

Investigators have deployed a force similar to that used in major criminal cases, with detectives specializing in sexual offenses and a large team that has already begun interviewing witnesses. The evidence seized in the searches following the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor at Sandringham residence, in Norfolk, and at Royal Lodge, within the Windsor grounds, where the investigated party lived for almost two decades, is also continuing to be analyzed.

The origin of the investigation lies in the documentation published by the United States Department of Justice, according to which Mountbatten-Windsor, during his tenure as a commercial envoy for the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2011, allegedly shared confidential information with Epstein. These exchanges would include details about official trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, or Vietnam, as well as information about investments, despite the confidentiality obligations inherent to the position.

According to Thames Valley Police Deputy Chief Constable Oliver Wright, the investigation is examining "various aspects of alleged misconduct". In statements collected by The Times, he insists that this type of offense can take many different forms: from abuse of power for sexual purposes to conflicts of interest, fraud or undue influence. In this regard, officers do not rule out the possibility that other independent crimes or a combination of offenses may emerge.

One of the key points is to determine whether the role of special trade envoy fits within the legal definition of a public office, an indispensable requirement to be able to bring charges for "misconduct in public office". The police are working in coordination with the Crown Prosecution Service to consolidate the legal basis of the case.

An indelible stain

Concurrently, investigators are analyzing possible sex offenses linked to Andreu's relationship with Epstein. Among these, the testimony of a woman stands out, who claims to have been taken to the United Kingdom in 2010 to have sexual relations with Mountbatten-Windsor. Although she has not yet been interviewed, her lawyer is cooperating with the police. Other similar accusations are also being studied, and the door remains open to new complaints.

In this regard, the police have made a public appeal for possible victims and witnesses to contact the authorities, emphasizing that the investigation is not limited to the leak of confidential information but encompasses any potentially criminal conduct. "When a victim is ready to talk, we will be ready to listen to her," stated Wright.

This appeal is particularly significant because Scotland Yard had previously examined other accusations of sex trafficking by Jeffrey Epstein for Andreu's benefit, and interviewed Virginia Giuffre, who accused the former prince of rape on three occasions when she was seventeen years old.

However, the Metropolitan Police of London eventually decided not to open any investigation. Andreu has always denied any irregular conduct and stated that he does not recall having had any relationship with Giuffre, who committed suicide last year. In 2022, the queen's son had to pay twelve million pounds in compensation to avoid a civil trial in New York.

The periodic return of Andreu Mountbatten-Windsor to the headlines for his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein continues to tarnish the British monarchy, at the center of a scandal that says a lot about the dysfunctionality of the Windsor family and the Crown.
