At least five people have died and five others have been injured, three of them seriously, this Sunday at 2 p.m. (8 p.m. in Catalonia) after an Amazon cargo plane went off the runway during a landing maneuver at Miami International Airport.
According to local authorities, the plane left runway 30, crashed into several cars, inside which some people were trapped, and then hit a van, where seven passengers were traveling. The impact also caused a fire on the runway. "We are dealing with a very complex situation in the engine compartments, which have caught fire. This meant that the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped in the aircraft, had to be rescued," explained Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah.
The chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Jennifer Homendy, detailed in a press conference from the airport that they are continuing to work to recover the victims' bodies. At the same time, she pointed out that the authorities have recovered the plane's black box, which will be taken to the NTSB offices to study more details of the incident.
At this time the causes of the accident are unknown, and the United States Federal Aviation Administration has assured in a press conference that the events will be investigated. The accident forced the airport to be shut down and mobilized up to 60 fire vehicles with 200 personnel to extinguish the fire.
