BarcelonaThe Spanish Tax Agency must return €2.198 billion corresponding to 2.33 million 2024 income tax returns filed by Catalan taxpayers, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Finance. The money to be returned corresponds to the personal income tax (IRPF) returns of the income tax campaign, which opened on April 2 and closed this Monday, June 30.

Thus, the Ministry of Finance has received 4,307,810 returns for 2024 from Catalonia this year, 2.86% more than in the 2023 campaign that took place a year ago. Of these, 2,335,403 have resulted in the State having to return money to the taxpayer (or taxpayers in the case of joint married couples' returns), with a total value of more than €2.198 billion. On average, each negative return will receive a €941.22 refund.

According to data from the Treasury, the tax authority has already returned around €1.441 billion to approximately 1.79 million Catalan taxpayers, approximately 76% of those who owe a refund.

The remaining returns have yielded positive results, meaning taxpayers must pay the Tax Agency. The result varies for each individual due to a wide variety of factors, such as income (which affects how much personal income tax they must pay), withholdings applied to salaries and other payments, Social Security contributions, and the right of each citizen to all types of refunds and reductions.

Fewer returns in Spain

In Spain, some 24.5 million tax returns were filed, of which 15.9 million resulted in the return of €9.099 billion to citizens. In fact, the total number of tax returns resulting in a tax liability for taxpayers increased by 11.98% compared to the previous year, while those requiring a refund from the administration fell by 1.81% across Spain as a whole.

In addition to income tax returns, the declaration for asset tax payments was filed during the same period. In Spain, more than 226,000 tax returns were filed, resulting in a total of €2.133 billion. In the case of Catalonia, the Catalan Tax Agency is responsible for collecting this tax on large personal assets.
