BarcelonaIt was a widespread demand. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the self-employed were calling for it, and it was also one of the points demanded by Junts in the Spanish government. Finally, the Verifactu electronic invoice verification system will have its mandatory implementation delayed by one year, moving to 2027 instead of January 1st for companies and July 1st for the self-employed.

This delay will be approved this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers. The measure was announced by the Spanish Prime Minister. Pedro Sánchez, in an interview on TVE and forms part of a decree with measures demanded by Junts that were pending implementation. Verifactu was due to come into effect within a month for SMEs that pay corporate tax, and on July 1st for the self-employed. The Spanish government has decided to postpone the entry into force of the new invoice verification system until January 1st, 2027.

The new Verifactu regulations, part of the measures against tax fraud, aim to make it easier to prove that an invoice has been verified by the Tax Agency. The imminent implementation of these regulations had generated considerable concern among SMEs and the self-employed. Verifactu will, once in effect, automatically send invoices to the Tax Agency and guarantee that they cannot be modified. In this way, all invoices will be registered with the Tax Agency and no subsequent alterations will be possible. It will not affect companies that electronically submit their billing records through the SII system, designed for companies with a turnover exceeding six million euros. Following existing problems and complaints, several initiatives have been launched to address concerns. One of these was presented by the Professional Association of Tax Technicians of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands (APttCB) It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to resolve all questions related to Verifactu. The tool will also be available to all members of the Spanish Federation of Professional Associations of Tax Technicians and Tax Advisors (FETTAF).
