The Ibex crumbles for the first time the barrier of 20,000 points

The fall of oil and the good performance of North American tech companies accelerate the Spanish selective

BarcelonaThe Ibex-35, the main Spanish stock market index, broke the 20,000-point barrier for the first time this Tuesday. The index of the country's large companies thus culminates the chain of records it has been linking throughout 2026. At the close of the session, it only needed a moderate acceleration – of 0.21%, already outside of trading hours – to rise above historic highs and end the day above 20,023 points.

Now outside of the earnings season, the Ibex has accelerated, largely thanks to external stimuli. The Spanish index has benefited from the sharp drop in oil prices at the start of the week. The Brent barrel even surpassed 93 dollars last Thursday, amid growing military tensions in the Middle East; but positive prospects in the region have caused it to fall below the 80-dollar threshold after 6 p.m.

It has also benefited from the good health of American technology hyperscalers, which inject optimism into the overall market. Just recently, on Monday, Amazon joined the $3 trillion valuation club, while other major companies in the sector, such as Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet (Google), saw significant share price increases.

Rising stocks

The bearish behavior of oil mainly benefits industrial companies dependent on energy prices. In this regard, among the main protagonists at the start of the session is the steel company ArcelorMittal. Other industrials, such as the Catalan Fluidra and Grifols or the defense giant Indra, also ended the day with increases above 1%.

Furthermore, economic optimism linked to the cheaper oil also boosts the banking sector, which started the day with all stocks in the green – with the sole exception of BBVA, which ended Tuesday with a slight drop of 0.32%.

Conversely, Acciona woke up to a sharp drop marked by the announcement published on Monday evening that the Entrecanales Franco family would sell 3% of the construction and infrastructure firm to "diversify the portfolio" of some of its members; with a valuation of just under 360 million euros, a discount of 5.7% compared to the previous closing.
