BarcelonaThe Catalan Tax Agency (ATC), the body that collects taxes on behalf of the Generalitat (Catalan Government), has tripled the total number of people it has assisted with their income tax returns this year. Thus, in the 2024 personal income tax return campaign, which ended on Monday, a total of 47,205 people requested support from the ATC, more than triple the 13,193 from the previous campaign.

In principle, personal income tax should be the first of the major taxes that the Generalitat (Catalan Government) begins to collect as part of the agreement between the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) and ERC (Republican Workers' Party) for the so-called "singular financing," which should eventually transfer the collection capacity of all taxes in Catalonia to the Generalitat instead of the state Tax Agency. In principle, the Spanish government and the Generalitat plan that by 2026, Catalans will already have to pay their income tax to the ATC.

The 47,205 taxpayers who have requested help from the ATC represent just over 1% of the more than 4.3 million declarations This campaign has been presented in Catalonia. According to data from the Department of Economy of the Generalitat (Generalitat), 25,136 people have been assisted in the Barcelona district this year (13,531 in person and the rest by telephone), compared to 6,562 in 2024. In Girona, the number has increased from 2,694 to 8,021 applications; from 1,759 to 3,876 (2,330 by telephone); and in Tarragona, from 2,178 to 10,172 people (with 6,608 telephone consultations). In addition, the same service helped file wealth tax returns. Satisfaction in the Generalitat

The Minister of Economy, Alícia Romero, described the citizen support system as a "success." It consisted of 36 in-person offices across the country and 102 professionals. In addition to the offices, there were 87 citizen service points. According to the Minister, the deployment "has been a test of good governance," which was passed with "an excellent grade."

The telephone support service was available between May 6 and June 30, while the in-person service was launched on June 2 and also ended on the 30th, the last day set by the Ministry of Finance for filing tax returns.
