BarcelonaIn 2024, Matadepera was once again the Catalan municipality with the highest income. The town in the Vallès Occidental was followed by Sant Just Desvern (Baix Llobregat) and Sant Cugat del Vallès (Vallès Occidental) on the podium of localities with the wealthiest households in the country. In fact, on a national scale, Matadepera ranked in second place, only surpassed by Pozuelo de Alarcón, in Madrid, according to household income distribution data published this Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Thus, households in Matadepera obtained net incomes of 28,607 euros per person in 2024, while Pozuelo de Alarcón was the only city in the country with more than 30,000 euros in per capita income, with 32,612. Sant Just and Sant Cugat registered an income per inhabitant of 26,434 euros and 26,306 euros, respectively, just as in the 2023 data published a year ago. In fact, Catalonia is the autonomous community with the most municipalities in the top 15, as the two previous municipalities occupy the sixth and seventh positions.

Furthermore, five towns from the Maresme also enter the list, occupying positions between tenth and fourteenth in the ranking of highest income: Alella, Tiana, Teià, Cabrils, and Sant Vicenç de Montalt. In these cases, they are situated with incomes between 25,772 euros per person for the first municipality and 24,637 for the fifth. Data by municipality and census sections can be consulted on the attached map published by the INE.

How to calculate if you earn more than your neighbors

The figure on the map is not the salary of each neighbor: it is the net income of each household divided by all the people living there, including children and retirees. To compare, add up everything earned in your home over a year: salaries (what reaches your account, multiplied by the number of payments), pensions, unemployment benefits or other subsidies, and any rent or interest received by all household members. Then, divide the result by the number of people living in your home. For example, in a family with two parents and two children, where one parent earns 1,800 euros net in 14 payments and the other 1,500 in 12, the household earns 43,200 euros per year, which is 10,800 euros per person. This is the number you should compare with your street. Keep in mind that the INE data is from 2024: if your income has increased since then, use the figures from that year for a fair comparison.

At the other extreme, municipalities with the lowest income per person are concentrated mainly in Andalusia, with Iznalloz, in Granada, at the top of the list with only 9,153 euros per person in 2024. El Palmar de Troya, in Seville, and Albuñol, in Granada, were in second and third place, respectively. In fact, of the fifteen municipalities with households with the lowest income, all were Andalusian, with four exceptions: Chozas de Canales and Minglanillas, in Castilla-La Mancha, and Zahínos and Talayuela, in Extremadura. Thus, in the richest municipality of the State, a household earns on average more than three times as much as in the poorest municipality.

Catalonia is the fourth autonomous region in the State in terms of the percentage of municipalities with high incomes. 44.1% of Catalan towns were among the 25% of municipalities with the highest income in Spain, a percentage only exceeded, by far, by Navarre and the Basque Country, with 71.3% and 89.2%, respectively, and by the Balearic Islands, with 46.3%. At the other extreme, only 3.2% of towns and cities in the country were among the 25% with the lowest income in the State, a figure only improved by the Balearic Islands, which has none, and also the two chartered autonomous communities, below 2% in both cases.

Inequalities within Catalonia

The data published by the INE allow for the observation of differences even between census sections. In the case of Catalonia, the differences are particularly sharp, as there are census sections in municipalities like Badalona or Tarragona with incomes below 7,000 euros per person, little more than a sixth of those in the highest-income sections, which exceed 40,000 euros per capita annually.

The map allows us to observe how the areas with the highest-income households are concentrated in the city of Barcelona, especially in what is colloquially known as Upper Diagonal (the Pedralbes neighborhood and the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district), as well as areas of Les Corts and the center and left side of the Eixample, and in maritime neighborhoods such as Vila Olímpica and El Fòrum.

Within the Barcelona area, municipalities of the Vallès also stand out, such as the aforementioned Sant Cugat and Matadepera, but also areas like Bellaterra, La Garriga, or La Roca del Vallès, as well as the centers of Sabadell and Terrassa. Also standing out among the wealthiest zones are the lower Maresme and the coastal municipalities of the Baix Llobregat, such as Castelldefels, in addition to the neighboring Sitges (Garraf).

Outside the metropolitan area, the centers of large cities, such as Tarragona, Reus, Girona, Lleida, or Manresa, have incomes notably higher than the average, while the peripheral neighborhoods or municipalities near these urban hubs are where most census sections in the low-income bracket accumulate. Among the regions with the highest incomes are also the Vall d'Aran and Cerdanya, in addition to municipalities in the Empordà and Tarragonès (Altafulla and Torredembarra), and at the other extreme, areas of municipalities with intense tourism, such as Salou, Lloret de Mar, or Blanes, among others, also stand out.
