BarcelonaGrifols reorganizes the structure of its biopharmaceutical business, the one that contributes the most to the company's turnover. As announced in a statement, it will create "differentiated organizations" of biopharma for the United States, the Catalan company's main market, and for the rest of the world. According to the pharmaceutical company, this move serves to "further strengthen the operational and financial independence of the subsidiaries". In this way, plasma collected in the United States will be used to cover the country's market, while that extracted in the rest of the world will go to the European market and other environments where the company operates.

Grifols' biopharmaceutical business in the United States is the largest in the sector, with nearly 300 plasma donation centers and two major industrial plants. It is worth noting that recently it has sought to diversify plasma procurement and the processing of plasma-derived medicines. It has done so, to a large extent, through the expansion of its joint initiative with the Egyptian government, Grifols Egypt for Plasma Derivatives, which will mobilize a total investment of 460 million euros.

Within the reorganization, Grifols has appointed Felipe Palacios as the new senior vice president of biopharma for the United States. Palacios, with more than 25 years of experience in the company, will lead commercial operations in the country. The head of the biopharma business in the rest of the world will be the senior vice president of the segment, Thierry Heinrich. According to the non-executive chairwoman of the multinational, Anne-Cathrine Berner, the reorganization serves to "build a more efficient, resilient, and profitable operating model". "The autonomy of the platforms will strengthen execution and accelerate decision-making," she added.

On the stock market "to recognize value"

The separation of biopharma in the US from the rest of the world occurs at a moment of special strategic relevance, in which the company continues to study the stock market exit of part of the North American business. The pharmaceutical company, it should be remembered, opened the door to the sea by launching a public offering for a minority stake in the North American segment of biopharma, a business that "operates in the world's principal plasma market and is fully integrated".

As indicated by the president in his intervention at the general shareholders' meeting, held in mid-June, the stock operation would serve to "highlight the extraordinary value" of the company's infrastructure in the United States. The biopharmaceutical vertical worldwide, it should be remembered, contributed 6,485 million euros to the Catalan company's turnover in 2025, 86% of the group's total revenue.
