Nissan reindustrialization

Goodman will invest €123 million in a new multi-story logistics facility on the former Nissan site.

Ebro will expand the plant by another 60,000 square meters for logistics purposes.

BarcelonaAustralian industrial developer Goodman, the successful bidder for the lease of the former Nissan land in Barcelona's Zona Franca, will invest €123 million over the next two years to build a new multi-story warehouse for logistics and last-mile distribution, planning to house between three and four warehouses. The new 144,000-square-meter warehouse will begin leasing this year, with full occupancy expected in 2028.

This is the latest major operation on these lands, where Goodman landed in mid-2023 to develop the Barcelona City Hub, a multi-story space. In 2024, production of Ebro brand vehicles began as part of an alliance between Ebro's owner, EV Motors, and Chinese carmaker Chery, which plans to begin manufacturing the Omoda 5 model that same year. In fact, the construction of this Goodman logistics warehouse won't be the only new development: Ebro and Chery will expand their industrial plant by 57,000 square meters, reaching 310,000.

"We are looking for solutions to reduce the consumption of industrial land to find other uses. We have a multi-plant project to save 30% of land consumption, and we will be able to create more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs," explained the country manager Goodman's Spain, Ignacio Garcia, because the new 144,000 square meter plant will only occupy 94,000 square meters of land.

More logistics space for Ebro

"This expansion is due to the fact that the company is following the expected sales levels, with the Ebro S700, Ebro S800 models and Ebro S400, which are giving good results and we are expanding production capacity," explained the president of Ebro Motors, Rafael Ruiz. "We are going to allocate the 57,000 square meters to logistics. It could be a space for the supply chain that provides us with supplies." just in time. "We are working with many suppliers," he added during the presentation of the new project, which Goodman unveiled at the International Logistics Show (SIL) in Barcelona, with the presence of the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and the actors who participated in the reindustrialization process of Nissan. "All of this is an example of collaboration between workers and also that includes workers from a public-private collaboration company," Isla said.

Ebro is producing at a rate of 30,000 cars per year through one line and two shifts that occupy up to 800 workers, but in September the car manufacturer plans to incorporate a third production shift, at the same time that it has begun to prepare 5 before the end of the year, which will allow it to reach 1,000 workers. "We are making an investment of 100 million euros in assembly, welding and puncture lines to manufacture another 100,000 cars each year," said Ruiz, in an address to the later media, before landing on the land rented by Amazon and Mercadona.
