Endesa admits a peak in electricity demand due to the heat

A series of outages left many customers without power between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday.

BarcelonaEndesa has resolved the problem of blackouts and power outages for customers in the city of Barcelona. The company announced at 1:00 p.m. that "the three medium-voltage outages associated with last night's incidents have been resolved." One of them was resolved with a generator in the area between General Mitre and Muntaner and the repair of the damaged distribution center.

The company admits that there has been an increase in electricity demand as a result of the heat due to the use of air conditioners and other climate control devices. In fact, demand in Catalonia has risen 11% this year compared to the same period in 2024, and yesterday, Monday, the peak consumption of the summer so far was broken, surpassing that recorded on June 25, with nearly 7,300 MW of maximum power.

Still far from the record

In any case, "despite the increase, we are not in an exceptional situation," according to Endesa. The company is supplying electricity to 430 customers. This morning, a total of 507 customers in the capital were still without power due to incidents in the medium-voltage network, according to the company. They were left without power for hours.

The company assures that "there is no single cause that led to the incidents" and points out that it has more than one million supply points in the Catalan capital. By this time, most of the incidents had already been normalized, except for two that are still being worked on due to difficulties accessing the facilities."
