Anthropic, the creator of Claude, closes access to its most advanced AI models
Trump makes it impossible for Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to be available due to disagreements with the company
BarcelonaAnthropic, the creator of the artificial intelligence chatbot Claude, has suspended public access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The decision comes at a time of maximum tension between the company and Donald Trump's administration.
European legislation on cybersecurity and artificial intelligenceThe company maintains that its technology contains restrictions to prevent misuse that could jeopardize the cybersecurity of sensitive sectors, such as finance or telecommunications. "We understand that the government believes it has discovered a method to circumvent, or unlock, Fable 5," it said, and regretted not knowing the specific "reasons" for the decision.
From Brussels, community spokesperson Thomas Regnier opined that this new decision by the Trump administration "further underscores Europe's need for technological sovereignty." In parallel, he once again advocated for European legislation on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and assured that they are working to "address all the risks" posed by the most advanced models.
Tension with Trump
Already at the end of February, the bad relationship between the US government and the company became evident. Then Trump ordered federal agencies not to use Anthropic's technology, which until then was what was used in the classified system of the Department of Defense.
The tycoon responded in this way to Antrophic's opposition to its innovations being used to order missile launches, fly autonomous military drones, and apply mass surveillance, as the Pentagon demanded.
The company sheltered behind ethical and risk arguments. "In a small set of cases, we believe that AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values," argued Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei. In his opinion, the use of autonomous weapons and mass surveillance "simply remain outside the limits of what current technology can do safely and reliably".
The exclusion from the Department of Defense's classified system was an exemplary punishment. At that time, the US executive already declared Anthropic "a risk to the supply chain".
