The magician Pop confirms interest in buying the Regina Theatre
The company La Trepa, manager of the venue since 1988, feels like "collateral damage" from the real estate operation
BarcelonaThe Teatre Regina building is for sale. The owning company is negotiating with one of the great Catalan producers, El Mago Pop, who already owns the Teatre Victòria, and is interested in this property on Carrer Sèneca, next to the Jardinets de Gràcia, which has a theatre for 350 spectators on the ground floor. This was announced by La Vanguardia and has been confirmed in a statement by the magician Antonio Díaz's agency, which states that the negotiations are in their initial stages.
The statement wishes to deny that this is a "speculative" operation: "We have dedicated ourselves to theatre for over twenty years, reinvesting our resources in cultural projects and taking risks that are not always common in the sector," it states. The confirmation also seeks to respond to the complaint of the current managers of the venue, the company La Trepa, which has been a resident of the Jove Teatre Regina since 1988, and has given it identity for almost four decades. Its director, Mariona Campos, laments in ARA that they are "the victim" of the real estate operation: "There is collateral damage here and it is called Regina. But it is the bread and butter of this city. One day it's a haberdashery and the next, an artistic project," she states. Campos, who entered the theatre at 1 year old, when her parents took over the management and from which she took over in 2013, is trying "to be able to finish the season in the venue" and, in parallel, is looking at options to be able to work next year.

The entire building, constructed in 1945, has 1,400m2. The Regina was a cinema in the sixties and later became a theatre. Since La Trepa entered in the eighties – a company with 49 years of history and one of those that invented school theatre tours – it has focused on the school and family audience, although it also programs adult shows, especially monologues. La Trepa has produced a new show each year, in addition to restaging and programming about fifteen shows per season. They now have ticket sales open until May, but they have not yet announced the theatre workshops they used to do in the summer because they don't know when they will have to leave the Regina. "We have done discreet work and out of vocation, and now we see that there are many people who love us, it's exciting," she admits.
The Magician Pop bought the Victòria in 2019. In 2023 he bought a theater in Missouri, which for now has no programming. The last thing he has announced is a stadium tour that will last several years.
