The magician Pop confirms interest in buying the Regina Theatre
The company La Trepa, manager of the hall since 1988, feels harmed by the real estate operation
BarcelonaThe Regina Theatre is for sale. Its owners have sought buyers from the theatre sector and one of the major Catalan producers, Mago Pop (who already owns the Victòria Theatre), has proposed himself as the buyer of this venue for 350 spectators on Sèneca street, next to the Jardinets de Gràcia, in the center of Barcelona. La Vanguardia reported this on Friday and it has been confirmed in a statement by the magician Antonio Díaz's agency, which states that the negotiations are in their initial stages.
The statement seeks to deny that this is a "speculative" operation: "We have dedicated more than twenty years to theatre, reinvesting our resources in cultural projects and taking risks that are not always common in the sector," it states. The confirmation also seeks to respond to the complaint from the current managers of the venue, the company La Trepa, which has been a resident of the Jove Teatre Regina since 1988, and has given it its identity for almost four decades. Its director, Mariona Campos, lamented to La Vanguardia
that they were the "victims" of the real estate operation and asked to be able to "close the artistic project with dignity," as their lease ended on March 31, 2026. For this reason, Mago Pop assures in the statement that the contract with the tenants included an addendum to continue the season until August 31 and states that they have offered to maintain part of the project, ceding them the theatre free of charge for school performances. "We deeply value their work and that is why we have sought collaboration formulas," they state. For their part, La Trepa has sought municipal support to be able to move their work to another theatre space.
The Regina was born as a cinema in the sixties and later became a theatre. Since La Trepa entered in the eighties – a company with 49 years of history, one of those that invented school theatre tours and which since 2013 has been managed by the daughter of one of the founders – it has focused on the school and family audience, although it also programs adult shows, especially monologues. There are currently shows on sale until May.
Mago Pop bought the Victòria in 2019, in 2023 he bought a theatre in Missouri, and the latest he has announced is a stadium tour that will last for years.
