Girona becomes the setting of a Disney production

Disney has landed in Girona with a team of 500 people to shoot the live-action version – in English, live action– from the film Tangled, his adaptation of the Rapunzel tale. It is a remake with real action from the original animated film, which will be shot this July in the city and is expected to premiere from 2027.

For the filming, workers are transforming both the interior and the staircase of the Girona Cathedral: inside the nave, curtains have been hung on the semicircular arches and part of the scenery is visible (such as lecterns or lion sculptures). Outside, a medieval-style platform has been installed in the middle of the steps and the ductwork is being covered to simulate columns. The filming – completely shielded – will begin this Tuesday and the restrictions are already causing guided tours to be adapted. For the moment, while it lasts, tourists are experiencing it with a mixture of expectation and surprise.

In April, Disney's production already generated extreme anticipation when a large casting of extras was organized at Parc de la Devesa and a crowd of young people and adolescents showed up to queue for the possibility of participating in the film. Those interested came from municipalities all over Catalonia, but there were even some from the rest of Spain, such as from Murcia and Alicante. The production put out a call to look for between 1,500 and 2,000 men, women, and children between 4 and 80 years old, as well as professional and amateur dancers up to seventy years old, with no restrictions on origin or appearance.

The movie being shot in Girona is based on the animated film Tangled, released in 2010 and humorously and adventurously adapting the fairy tale of Princess Rapunzel. Now the live-action version will be directed by Michael Gracey, director ofThe Greatest Showman (2017), and will feature Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Prince Flynn.
