Stellantis faces the risk of another fiasco with the 1.5 BlueHDI diesel engine.
The automotive group is calling for a review of models with the 1.5 BlueHDI engine manufactured between 2017 and 2023.

With the memory still fresh of The huge fiasco of the 1.2 PureTech engines, the automotive group Stellantis must now face a new challenge with the reliability problems of the 1.5 BlueHDI diesel engine manufactured between 2017 and 2023. These problems primarily affect models from the Citroën, Opel, Peugeot, DS, Fiat and even some Toyota models.
Stellantis Group officials have acknowledged that this engine has a design issue with the 7mm diameter chain that connects to the camshaft and that it can suffer premature wear, which could lead to a chain breakage that would require replacing the entire engine block. Starting in 2023, this engine will begin using a new 8mm diameter chain that is not at risk of breakage. As the half French The Automobile, The Stellantis Group's decision was made after an initial analysis of a sample of 3,000 vehicles when they noted an increase in complaints and claims from customers who had experienced incidents due to this breakdown.
The Stellantis Group has already recalled more than 600,000 models in France (where the number of affected cars could reach one million) and has announced that the recall will also be implemented in Spain in the coming months, although it declined to quantify the approximate number of affected cars.

Review procedure
The recall process involves sending a certified letter from the Directorate General of Traffic and the manufacturer informing affected parties that they must make an appointment and time at the nearest official workshop to undergo the relevant inspection free of charge. Once at the workshop, a specific tool will assess whether the 1.5 BlueHDI engine is in good condition or whether the original 7 mm chain needs to be replaced with a new one, or a minor software reprogramming is necessary. The maintenance of the ECU is sufficient to reduce the risk of breakdown. Furthermore, the Stellantis Group will extend the full warranty in the event of a breakdown of this component to ten years or 240,000 kilometers.
