Honda recalls Civic Type R from Europe due to emissions regulations

The Honda Civic Type R will bid farewell to Europe at the end of 2025 due to the impossibility of homologating the CO₂ emissions limit set by the European institutions starting next year. Its powerful 2.0 VTEC gasoline engine with 330 hp and 420 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission and a front-wheel drive layout, is not designed to comply with European emissions limits. The current generation of the Civic (the sixth) has only been on the market for about three years, although the Civic is already a well-known vehicle, with more than 30 years of continuous presence in Europe, and has always stood out for its Type R sport versions, designed to compete with the two great European sports compacts, the Volkswagen Golf R and the Renault.

Honda will continue to sell its Civic Type R in other markets where the carbon dioxide emissions restrictions seen in Europe do not exist, as it was not cost-effective to use any hybrid system on the current Civic platform.

Honda will retire the Civic Type R from Europe, but before doing so, the Japanese brand has announced a final limited run of 40 units called the Ultimate Edition. It will be distinguished by its white body color and several red stripes on the hood and sides of the vehicle. It will also have a black roof and mirrors to contrast with the various carbon fiber trim pieces, such as the spoiler, side skirts, and wing.

Beyond the exterior aesthetic details, this commemorative edition includes a lighting system that projects the Type R logo when the door is opened, and buyers will receive a box containing the special, numbered model within the series. The price of the Civic Type R in our market is €58,850, and this latest edition is expected to add a few thousand euros more to the final price, but it is sure to become a highly valued collector's item over time.
