Cupra announces the return of the Formentor VZ5
Four and a half years later, those from Baix Llobregat announce the return of the most radical version of the Formentor, with a five-cylinder engine and 390 hp of power.
The Cupra Formentor VZ5 is not a completely new model: the 2021 model year Cupra has already produced a limited edition of 7,000 units of this exclusive model. And it blew us away after our in-depth test drive. A fantastic model that uses the 2.5 TFSI 5-cylinder gasoline engine found in the Audi RS models, paired with a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and the 4Drive all-wheel drive system, thus taking advantage of the best of the technologies and engines available to this model.
Now, those from Baix Llobregat have decided to revive this fantastic sports coupe with a limited edition of just 4,000 units (3,000 units less than the previous model), taking advantage of the aesthetic and technological update that the Formentor received a year ago.
In fact, there is no significant new development in the mechanical section of the Formentor VZ5, which owes its name to the Spanish word fast and the number 5 referring to the cylinders of its fantastic engine, maintaining the 390 hp and 480 Nm of torque of the previous edition, so as not to exceed the psychological barrier of 400 hp, which the Volkswagen Group still reserves for Audi RS models. The set-up of the new Formentor VZ5 does feature significant improvements such as a new torque distribution function that optimizes performance and grip even when the vehicle is traveling at high speeds in adverse weather conditions or on poorly maintained surfaces.
But where this Formentor VZ5 shows its sporty essence is in details such as the widened wheel arches, the four diagonal exhaust pipes with copper details, or the 20-inch alloy wheels specific to this model. Inside, the Formentor VZ features bucket-style seats. bucket and various details with the Cupra logo.
The new Cupra Formentor VZ5 will go on sale during the first half of 2026, at a price yet to be confirmed, but which will surely exceed the 68,000 euros that each unit of the previous edition of the model cost. The new generation, more technological and exclusive – 3,000 fewer units will be manufactured than the previous edition – will surely have a final price of around 72,000 euros, slightly below what BMW is asking for its X2 M35i xDrive only 300 hp or the price of the 265 hp Audi Q5 45 TFSI Quattro.
