After an interview she conducted on the street went viral, Berta Mayral (Barcelona, 2001) gained another 20,000 followers on social media. She rode the wave, became known, and now dedicates herself to creating content on her TikTok and Instagram accounts, where she has more than 95,000 and 37,000 followers, respectively.

Mayral received her first money with her weekly allowance: "Back then, I smoked, and I said: '10 euros for leeks and 10 euros for whatever I wanted.' I've quit now, and I look back and say: 'How silly I was, because I could have saved them.'" "When I turned 18, both my father and my mother stood up to me and said: 'Now you have to make a living and you have to start working.'" So, she started working in the hotel industry: "I realized how hard it was to earn money, because it was the height of summer, I worked weekends and nights." This meant cutting back on her social life during the holidays: "I've always been very smart, and since I knew I couldn't change my job because it paid a lot, because nightlife and the restaurant industry make a lot of money, I got my boss to hire my best friends." So, she ended up enjoying herself a lot.

Later on, Instagrammer She combined weekend catering with her job as a cafeteria monitor and her studies in social and cultural anthropology: "I wanted to prioritize my studies, and I was very tired. The weekend schedule was very tough. It was from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.." "I wanted money not because I was rich, but because I spend a lot," she says. And attending classes in person made it difficult to find a job on weekdays. So she opted to study for her degree remotely and start working during the week at her father's family business, a medical center. The student assures that, being a responsible person, studying remotely has been a good idea. He adds: "I like to educate myself and learn. And I want to have a career for what might happen tomorrow."

As for personal finances, she spends the most money on her social life: "My friends want to travel, 'Come on, let's travel.' I don't think about it." She likes to socialize a lot, she doesn't spend much time at home, and that often means spending a lot of money outside. She also loves eating: "I like to order a good wine. I don't mind spending on this. It's a problem, because when I swipe my card, I don't say, 'That's bad.'"

In recent years, she's learned to save, and she sets a spending limit: "The income I get from social media goes directly into a savings account. And what I spend on a day-to-day basis is what I earn, from Shark and at the medical center." However, she assures that she could dedicate herself solely to sponsorships on social media: "It's too well paid; I don't understand how people get paid so much. I'm amazed at how little work it is because, meanwhile, I can have two other jobs. I mean, it pays very well." Currently, in addition to working at the medical center, she also promotes and is part of the team at Shark, a company that organizes parties and events: "They asked me to work together, they gave me a lot of freedom, and I feel very comfortable. It's a young team that is starting out with the brand."

But social media is really just a way to get what she wants: "I hope it's a more or less stable source of income so I can do what I really like, which is writing." Although she likes to communicate, her dream has never been to influencer"I've been writing a novel for five years, and it's more or less finished." She wants to have an online space in the future where she can talk about and promote her books.

More comfortable in Catalan

The worst financial decisions of the TikToker have been not starting to save earlier and financing mobile phones: "There were months when I earned 600 euros, but I was paying 180 for two mobile phones, one I had lost and the ninth one I had. I was very sad when I saw that they were taking it out of my account. You shouldn't finance. As my father says, don't buy with what you don't buy." However, the best decision has been to opt for creating content in Catalan on the internet: "They told me: 'Do it in Spanish.' I said: 'No, I feel more comfortable in Catalan,' and I think I can get more profit from it. And yes, it's a good decision, because there is still an uncovered market and then it's easier to enter and grow."
