Elections? Junts against the decrees and PSOE, Illa and ERC against Junts

The Maricarmen case has gone around the world (it has even reached the Pope). With Ceuta you could not go to elections. Now yes, now there is a clean cut: right and left

02/10/2026 - 11:54 h.

This morning began with a rumor that turned into a question: after Junts announced that it will not vote for the two housing decrees, will Pedro Sánchez announce the calling of elections? Because the scenario is favorable: the Maricarmen case has gone around the world (it has even reached the Pope), it has brought people out onto the streets; with the two decrees, the PSOE was siding with the people on the street, ergo if there has ever been a minimally favorable situation for the PSOE to call elections, it was this one. The Maricarmen case has erased Ceuta from the debate. With Ceuta you could not go to elections, but with Maricarmen you can. Now there is a clean cut: right and left.

This puts politics in the hands of scriptwriters. Now Ceuta is no longer the episode. Now it is Maricarmen. And these are episodes with countdowns. It does not matter that Sánchez has been governing for eight years, and that before Maricarmen many people had been evicted.

In classical politics, a government that cannot pass budgets or decrees as important as this one would call for elections. But for a long time now, we have not been in normal times. Sánchez will only announce elections if the demographics indicate it. Only if the polls say that everyone knows that Sánchez was with the people and not with the right and the far-right. Because Sánchez today has no incentive to call them, because they are pursuing him judicially.

This morning, however, the Spanish government and the PSOE are going all out. The Spanish government and Sumar have requested that this noon's vote in Congress be nominal, so that the deputies who vote against it have to be identified by name and surname.

This pair of tweets means everything. Pay attention to who is tweeting and how they are tweeting:

Pedro Sánchez: “The moment of truth has arrived. PP, Vox and Junts must choose: either they are with the social majority or with the speculators. Tomorrow their vote will portray them before entire generations”.

Salvador Illa: “An incomprehensible and irresponsible decision. Junts must rectify. [...] Defending Catalonia is defending its people. Junts, PP and Vox are doing exactly the opposite”.

Tweet in Spanish and with a retweet from the PSOE.

And from Esquerra, Joan Tardà quotes a sentence from deputy Etna Estrems: “How does Puigdemont think he will return having stolen people's future?” Great sentence from Esquerra fellow deputy Etna Estrems.

Junts will pay a political and social price for this vote. But to go as far as mixing the president's return after nine years in exile with the housing vote is a new record for the lowest point in terms of pro-independence cainism.

Meanwhile, the harsh reality prevails: The price of housing in Spain grows three times more than salaries. Look at this graph: the yellow line is the price of housing in Spain and the blue line is the average price in the European Union. The system has broken down, especially for young people, and for people of all ages who live in rented accommodation. What policies have been implemented over these years to avoid this divergence?

Good morning.
