Weekend with changeable weather: thin clouds, southwesterly winds and early morning showers
We will continue to experience the indirect effects of Storm Claudia, with colder weather expected next week.
The weekend is starting off calmer than yesterday. A weakened cold front associated with a deep Atlantic low-pressure system has passed through. Claudia It caused scattered, light showers and drizzle in various parts of the country. Rainfall was scarce except in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, where localized accumulations exceeded 40 or 50 l/m² in Pallars Sobirà (54 l/m² at Bonaigua, at 2,200 m). It also rained more heavily in the Ponent region and the rest of the Pyrenees, with totals of 5 to 15 l/m². The rain was accompanied by mud, which made everything dirty due to the presence of suspended dust from North Africa. Strong southerly winds blew at high elevations in the Pyrenees, exceeding 100 km/h. Notable gusts of 158 km/h were recorded at Lac Redon (2,247 m in the Vall d'Aran). Temperatures remained very mild, even breaking some records. This is the case at El Prat airport, where the 17.6ºC recorded in the early hours of Friday is the highest minimum temperature ever recorded in November in 75 years of data. Both today and tomorrow the weather will be varied, with a bit of everything. This Saturday will be a pleasant day in most areas, but from the afternoon onwards, a new wave of showers will arrive from the west, potentially reaching any area by early morning. Tomorrow the weather won't clear completely, with lower temperatures. It will be the prelude to a significantly colder week ahead.
Saturday: late showers
The weekend begins with sunshine and light clouds in many areas. The exception will be the southern slopes of the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida, where there will be significant cloud cover and light showers throughout the day, with a snow level of 2,300 meters. Cloud cover will increase in the west from the afternoon onwards. A new line of showers will arrive in this area during the evening and night, and these showers could occur anywhere in the country, from west to east, until the early hours of Sunday. Overall, they will be light and scattered; little rainfall is expected outside the southern slopes of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees.
Light to moderate winds will blow from the west and southwest across much of the territory, locally with some strong gusts (guts exceeding 80 km/h) on the peaks of the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees and Montseny.
The dust will begin to dissipate. Minimum temperatures will drop, making it cooler early in the morning, while maximum temperatures will remain mostly unchanged or rise slightly. The weather will still be quite mild for this time of year, with many temperatures between 17 and 22 °C.
Sunday: Temperatures down
Some light and scattered showers are still expected until the early hours, but the rain will clear quickly, leaving a sunny day with bands of thin, high clouds in most areas. However, cloud cover will return in the afternoon, along with some scattered and minor showers in parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast.
The snow level will drop to 2,000 m as temperatures fall tomorrow. Maximum temperatures will generally fall, with a more moderate drop, and minimum temperatures will often occur late in the day.
Possible winter tasting next week
Next week will begin with cooler temperatures. On Monday, northerly winds will arrive, bringing snow to the northern slopes of the Pyrenees and some afternoon showers to the northeast. All eyes are on the middle and end of the week, as the weather maps indicate that temperatures will drop significantly, potentially bringing early winter conditions with below-average values. In fact, by Wednesday, minimum temperatures in the Pyrenees will be around 8 degrees Celsius lower than current levels, with widespread frost in the high mountains (reaching -8°C at 2,000 meters). The coldest polar air mass will affect central and northern Europe, bringing midwinter-like temperatures. We'll need to get our heavy jackets ready!
Maximum wind gusts recorded in the last 24 hours:
- Lake Redon (2,247 m): 158 km/h
- Certascan (2,400 m): 129 km/h
- Bonaigua (2,200 m): 115 km/h
