Goodbye to the rains in the Ebro and calm everywhere tomorrow, but it won't last long

Rain and snow will reappear as Christmas approaches, bringing a more wintry atmosphere.

17/12/2025

BarcelonaCalm and clear skies prevailed on Wednesday, but rain continued to fall in the Ebro Valley, especially in the Montsià region, where very heavy rainfall totals of between 50 and 100 liters per square meter were recorded, causing some incidents and flooding. This was a much more localized finale to the rain event, while the rest of the country enjoyed a peaceful day, following the downpours on Monday and Tuesday that left localized totals of over 100 or 200 liters per square meter in some areas. Rain may still fall in the Ebro Valley until late into the night, but it will be lighter and clear by early morning. Tranquility will reign everywhere on Thursday, with plenty of sunshine, morning fog, and no rain anywhere. But this calm won't last long, as new changes are expected from Friday onwards. The week will end with more rain, snow, and cold temperatures, and the Christmas week looks set to be wintry and unsettled.

Thursday: a day to take advantage of

This Thursday will generally be the calmest day of the week. We'll get through a lot of fog and some low clouds due to the high humidity, but the sun will prevail, with only a few traces of completely harmless clouds. A pleasant day to enjoy, with cooler mornings and highs without much change.

The situation will also improve in the Valencian Community after several days of rain, although there will still be quite a few clouds and a few drops between Valencia and Alicante. Not much in an otherwise quite calm context.

Further changes expected by the end of the week

The approach of a front will bring increased cloud cover on Friday, with the possibility of some showers reappearing in the northeast and the Pre-Pyrenees. This will be brief, with the expectation that precipitation will spread over the weekend. This still uncertain situation will be the prelude to a more active low-pressure system early next week, bringing more rain and snow.

In fact, the snowfall will increase across the Pyrenees, with the snow level clearly dropping due to the arrival of colder air. We can expect more wintry days, coinciding with the official arrival of winter on Sunday morning. Indeed, current weather maps indicate that the Christmas holidays will be quite unsettled, with a risk of further precipitation and snow at relatively low elevations in the Pyrenees. This is an unsettled outlook that we will need to continue to monitor.
