The weather

Verbena in the heat of the dog days

Until after Sant Joan, highs of up to 40°C will remain in Ponent.

BarcelonaThe tail end of a worn-out front, the heat, and a slight drop in atmospheric pressure led to the formation of storm clouds this Sunday afternoon, with heavy showers and abundant downpours in Berguedà and Solsonès, among other regions (see the most notable rainfall figures). The start of the week will be marked by intense heat and more settled weather, with a predominant sun and afternoon showers more concentrated in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees.

Monday: less intense and widespread showers

This Monday, we expect a generally placid and warm festival. The prelude to the festival will be calm, with a serene morning and some residual low clouds or fog in the valleys of Central Catalonia or the Pre-Pyrenees, resulting from the previous afternoon's showers. With the warmer weather and the progress of the day, it will be very calm. At midday and during the afternoon, clouds will again gather, but the showers will be shorter-lived and the storms less intense than those on Sunday, concentrated in the Pyrenean regions. The San Juan festival will be very placid and warm, with the afternoon showers disappearing in the north of the country. This means there's no need to suffer from the festivities and outdoor dining, as no rain is expected and temperatures will be warm throughout.

San Juan: peak heat in some regions

Both Tuesday and Wednesday will see the African warm air pocket continue to hover over us, and the heat will be intense, with the possibility of reaching 40°C again in the West. Suffocating temperatures will be present everywhere, with markedly muggy conditions along the coast, tropical nights in many places, and locally torrid lows in some coastal areas. We will likely report the warmest Midsummer's Day in recent years in many regions, especially in the Barcelona and Girona pre-coastal areas, where temperatures could reach 36 or 37°C.
