BarcelonaThe heat has intensified today, after a few days of respite with more controlled heat. It is the prelude to a new heatwave that will push the mercury up to 42 or 43°C in Ponent and the Ebro basin, with fully canicular heat that will also reach the rest of the country. It will not be as intense a heatwave as the one we suffered during the month of June, but we will again be well above the meteorological average for the beginning of July. All this with a sun that will prevent any possible cloudburst or shower and with a high fire risk that remains elevated.

As happened less than two weeks ago, we will again be several consecutive days with many highs of 35°C to 40°C inland, considerably higher in Ponent and the Ebro Valley, marked mugginess on the coast, and sleepless nights that will once again become widespread. The hottest days will be Monday and Tuesday and, although from mid-week the thermometers will drop a little, we will continue with values clearly above average at least until mid-month. The anticyclone will continue to embrace us for many days, with no unstable moments on the horizon.

Forecast map for this Sunday morning.

Sunday: heatwave begins

Temperatures will take a leap forward on Sunday, both day and night, marking the first official day of the heatwave. Maximum temperatures will range between 33 °C and 38 °C in many cases, but will approach 40 °C in western Catalonia (Ponent). On the coast, the feeling of stuffiness will also increase, with highs of 30 °C or more. A scorching day with sun and calm, and the first warnings for daytime heat on the Costa Brava and also in the Terres de l'Ebre.

Monday: scorching heat

The heatwave will reach its peak between Monday and Tuesday, with maximum temperatures of 40°C in several inland areas, but up to 42°C or 43°C in Ponent and the Ebro valley, a thermal milestone that until relatively few years ago was difficult to reach, but is now common almost every summer. On the coast, maximum temperatures will range between 30°C and 35°C, with more controlled heat but very heavy mugginess. Nights will also be sleepless again everywhere, with generalized tropical minimums and torrid on the coast, especially on the central coast.
