The weather

The heat wave will ease, but it will take time to go away.

Temperatures will still remain very high, with the expectation that they will drop more significantly at the end of the week.

02/07/2025

July has begun again with a very sweltering atmosphere amidst the heat wave across the country, with nights of poor sleep, especially near the sea, and temperatures exceeding 40°C in the most stifling areas. However, strong afternoon thunderstorms in several inland regions yesterday caused a sudden cooling off wherever they fell (you'll find all the data for Tuesday at the end of this report). All this after the end of the The warmest June in our country's history, which has left us with numerous heat records.

This afternoon, showers and strong thunderstorms will be repeated in parts of the interior and the Pyrenees, and where they occur, the atmosphere will be cooler. The temperature drop will continue to increase over the coming days, especially at the end of the week and at the beginning of the next, with much more bearable heat and more comfortable nights.

Wednesday: very hot, with small changes

The heat wave will continue today, although maximum temperatures will drop by a few degrees. A negligible change that we will hardly notice. Therefore, we will have to sweat profusely for another day, with temperatures up to 40°C or more in the West and the southern interior, and 33 to 38°C in much of the country, with very marked muggy conditions on the coast. Meteocat maintains alerts for intense heat only in Segrià and the Ebro regions. The night has once again been tropical in many regions, especially near the sea, where some torrid lows—above 25°C—have been repeated. But nighttime temperatures have dropped overall, and it has even become cool in many inland regions where it rained yesterday, with more comfortable conditions.

All this, with sunshine in the morning and cloudy afternoons that will again bring intermittent showers and thunderstorms to several regions. Strong gusts of wind are expected. Meteocat maintains some alerts wherever it rains, and the cooling off will be evident again.

Less and less extreme heat

On Thursday, temperatures will drop slightly further, but not everywhere. The drop will be most noticeable in the Pyrenees, inland Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Menorca, and northern Mallorca. Therefore, the heat will become less extreme, and we'll be saying goodbye to the 40°C mark, but the atmosphere will remain very warm. There will be little change on Friday, but between the weekend and the beginning of next week, the drop in temperatures will be more evident.

Temperatures will even return to normal, with much more bearable summer heat during the day and more comfortable nights. That's when we'll finally say goodbye to a heat wave that will take a while to disappear. All this, with new afternoon showers and storms in the Pyrenees and inland areas, while we wait for instability to gain ground by the end of the week.

Review of the first day of July

July has begun still in the midst of a heat wave, with highs yesterday once again reaching and exceeding 40°C in the West and southern inland regions. Once again, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in Vinebre, in the Ribera d'Ebre region, with 41.4°C. Some inland areas of the northeast also reached 40°C. Sweltering heat was rampant throughout, but strong afternoon thunderstorms caused sudden drops of over 10°C wherever it rained. The storms were intense, with wind gusts of over 70 or 90 km/h, hail, and occasional flooding. They primarily affected the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, and the northern and eastern regions of Lleida. The 36 l/m² in Vilanova de Meià (Noguera), the 35 in Solsona and 32 in Lladurs (Solsonès) and the 30 in Muntanyola (Osona) stand out.
