Possible shower of showers and brief refreshment in sight

BarcelonaThe month of June and the meteorological summer –the astronomical one will arrive on June 21st– have begun this Monday with summer heat and mugginess, above average, but nothing to do with the extremes reached during last week's historic heatwave. Afternoon showers have repeated in the Pyrenees, and this Tuesday the passage of a front tail will cause showers and thunderstorms to increase in this area and in the northeast, with maestral and tramuntana winds. Wednesday will not rain anywhere, but the maps indicate that between Thursday and Friday the passage of a more active front will cause a spell of showers and storms in several regions and a subsequent very marked cooling. Therefore, in the coming days we will breathe better and better, although from the weekend onwards everything indicates that the mercury would rise again with gusto.

Tuesday: more afternoon showers

Temperatures will remain similar or drop slightly this Tuesday, but tropical minimums will recur on the coast and the atmosphere will be warm and muggy at midday. Many maximums will range between 28 and 33°C, locally up to 34 or 35°C in Ponent and the Ebro valley. In many mountain and coastal areas, they will be shorter. In the afternoon, the maestral and tramuntana winds will enter strongly in the south, in Empordà, and in Ponent, which will be noticeable in other elevated and inland areas.

Forecast map for this Tuesday afternoon.

All in all, with sun occasionally obscured by the passage of bands of high, thin clouds. The passage of a frontal tail will increase instability, and from mid-morning onwards, clouds will grow with enthusiasm in the north of the country. From then on, but especially during the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will fall irregularly in many parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast. Locally, they will leave some downpours, especially in the interior of the Girona regions. Meteocat has activated the alert for intense rain, which could leave more than 20 l/m² in half an hour in Ripollès and Garrotxa.

More storms and cool

Wednesday will be a quiet and sunny day overall, with no rain anywhere and lower temperatures. On Thursday, the mercury will rise temporarily, but the passage of a more active front will cause a clear increase in instability, with showers and thunderstorms in many regions, especially in the northern and eastern half of the country. Locally, some downpours will occur.

This change in weather will open the doors to cold air, with a strong cooldown that will cause Friday to even have values that are too restrained for these dates, with most highs around 25°C and very cool nights. But this respite seems to be short-lived, as from the weekend onwards the anticyclonic ridge and the heat will regain prominence.
