Possible downpour of showers and brief refreshment in sight

BarcelonaThe month of June and the meteorological summer – the astronomical one will arrive on June 21 – have started with summer heat and stuffiness and values above average, but nothing to do with the extremes reached during last week's historic heatwave. In fact, last night was cooler and only locally tropical in some coastal nooks. Afternoon showers were concentrated yesterday only in some places in the Pyrenees, and a few drizzles fell in Barcelona this morning. But today the passage of a front tail will cause showers and thunderstorms to increase in the Pyrenees and the northeast, with mistral and tramuntana winds. It will not rain anywhere on Wednesday, but the maps indicate that between Thursday and Friday the passage of a more active front will cause a spell of showers and thunderstorms in various counties and a subsequent very marked cooling. Therefore, in the coming days we will breathe better and better, although from the weekend onwards everything indicates that the mercury would rise again with enthusiasm.

Tuesday: more afternoon showers

Temperatures will remain similar or slightly decrease this Tuesday. The night has been generally cooler and pleasant for sleeping, with only some very localized tropical minimums on the coast. At midday, the atmosphere will once again be warmer and more humid than expected, even rising further south, although without extremes. Many maximums will range between 28 and 33 °C, locally up to 34 or 35 °C in Ponent and the Ebro valley. In many mountain and coastal areas, they will be shorter. In the afternoon, the mistral and tramuntana winds will enter with force in the south, in Empordà, and in Ponent, which will be noticeable in other elevated and inland areas.

Forecast map for this Tuesday afternoon.

All in all, with sun intermittently obscured by the passage of bands of high, thin clouds. The passage of a frontal tail will increase instability, and from mid-morning onwards, clouds will grow with vigor in the north of the country. From then on, but especially during the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will fall irregularly in many parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and northeast. Locally, they will leave some downpours, especially in the interior of the Girona regions, and the showers will reach the Costa Brava, although more weakened. Meteocat has activated the alert for intense rain, which could leave more than 20 l/m² in half an hour in some northeastern regions.

More storms and fresh

Wednesday will be a quiet and sunny day overall, with no rain anywhere and lower temperatures. On Thursday, the mercury will rise temporarily, but the passage of a more active front will cause a clear increase in instability, with showers and thunderstorms in many regions, especially in the northern and eastern half of the country. Locally, some heavy downpours will occur.

This change in weather will open the doors to cold air, with a forceful cooling that will cause Friday to even have values too restrained for these dates, with most highs around 25°C and quite cool nights. But this respite seems to be short-lived, as from the weekend the anticyclonic ridge and the heat will regain prominence.
