A polar front arrives at the gates of the weekend
Showers and storms will affect more counties and temperatures will hit bottom
BarcelonaThe weather continues to be unsettled, and a polar front will reach us by this Friday, which will accentuate instability and cause temperatures to bottom out, with very cool conditions, more typical of early spring than mid-May. Thermometers will be between 3 and 8 degrees below the average for the time of year, with the vast majority of maximums below 20 ºC. This drop will contrast with the 25 ºC reached today on the Barcelona coast and the Costa Daurada due to warm easterly and westerly winds. A late snowfall will also occur in the Pyrenees, with a snow line that will drop below 1,500 m.
As has already happened in recent hours, between today and tomorrow morning, it will rain heavily in Alt Empordà, Rosselló, and nearby areas, such as Alta Garrotxa, Pla de l'Estany, and Alt Ripollès. Meteocat maintains an alert in Alt Empordà for local rainfall exceeding 100 l/m² in 24 hours. So far, noteworthy are the 37 l/m² accumulated in Sant Pere Pescador and the 32 in the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, 28 of which fell in just half an hour. Tomorrow, afternoon showers and thunderstorms will affect more counties and may bring new downpours and hailstorms, also on various stretches of the coast, and the wind will blow at the extremes. Over the weekend, the mercury will remain subdued, although the weather will improve. And it seems that next week the anticyclone will return, and it will be hotter.
Friday: showers and a lot of coolness
This Friday's news will be the drop in temperatures, which will hit rock bottom due to the entry of more cold air due to the passage of a polar front. The cooling will be significant, and most of the highs will be between 15 and 20 ºC. The cold will be evident in mountainous areas, and the snow line will plummet from 1,600 to 1,400 m in the Pyrenees, and it may even snow at 1,200 m on the north face in the afternoon.
A very cool atmosphere, unusual for May, which will be accompanied by an increase in instability. Until Friday morning, it will rain heavily between Alt Empordà and Roussillon and in nearby areas. Showers will also fall in the early morning and during the morning in other parts of the northeast and the Pyrenees. In most regions, there will be a lot of cloudiness, and some showers will also escape in the Ports area.
Cold nights and more calm this weekend
In the south and west, it will hardly rain, but the wind, between mistral and west, will continue to blow moderately with some strong gusts. The tramuntana will also increase in Empordà.

Be careful with weekend nights, as they will be cold, with lows that will hit bottom. You will have to bundle up more than necessary at this time of year, with quite widespread frost in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees that will hardly leave this area. Maximums will recover, but will remain held back, with a north wind at the extremes. Saturday will be dominated by sun, with only a few local afternoon showers in the Pyrenees. Sunday, showers and thunderstorms would fall again in more inland areas of the northern half and in the Ports.
It will be the final flourish of instability and coolness, as next week the anticyclone will impose itself and sun and calm will once again dominate. All this with temperatures that will rise again and with a warmer atmosphere at midday.
