Let's bundle up: it'll be freezing everywhere tomorrow, but today the highs will start to rise.

BarcelonaThe surge of cold air from polar regions has reached its peak in the last few hours, bringing wintry conditions. Yesterday, maximum temperatures plummeted, and this morning we woke to freezing temperatures everywhere and widespread frost, including along some coastal areas. Early this morning, temperatures in the high Pyrenees reached -10°C. It's essential to bundle up before going outside, and the wind was still blowing strongly this morning in the north of the country, after gusts exceeding 100 km/h yesterday in the Pyrenees peaks with blizzard conditions and in parts of the Empordà region, notably reaching 145 km/h in Portbou (Alt Empordà). This wind will clearly subside today, with maximum temperatures beginning to recover, and the thermometer should return to normal in the coming days. Sunshine and generally calm weather will prevail. However, Sunday could bring a new change in the weather, with colder temperatures, more snowfall in the Pyrenees, and scattered showers.

Thursday: very cold in the morning

We woke up to bitterly cold winter air and widespread frost after a frigid night. Many minimum temperatures hovered between -1 and -5°C inland, along the northern pre-coastal areas, in the Pyrenean valleys, and in other mountainous regions. Some coastal stretches even dipped below 0°C, notably reaching -1°C in Cunit, in the Baix Penedès region. At an altitude of 2,500 meters in the Pyrenees, temperatures reached -10°C. Only a few areas along the coast and pre-coastal zones, in the south, and in areas still affected by the wind recorded minimum temperatures. In short, it's essential to dress warmly first thing in the morning. Maximum temperatures, however, will rise somewhat, with the most significant increase expected in the Pyrenees, primarily due to sunshine and the gradual dissipation of the colder air mass aloft. Many highs of 10 to 15 °C, higher in the south and lower in mountainous areas.

Generally sunny, although thin, high bands of clouds will arrive throughout the day, potentially obscuring the sky slightly in the afternoon. There will also be intervals of cloud on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, where a few isolated, weak showers are possible, with the snow level rising to between 1,200 and 1,400 m. The mistral and tramontana winds will persist in the Empordà region, on the Pyrenean peaks, and in the south. They will blow strongly until morning, gradually weakening and decreasing in extent throughout the day.

The next change in weather could arrive this weekend.

Friday and Saturday will be calm and pleasant days, with the wind no longer a concern and temperatures gradually rising and returning to normal. Only on Friday is there a chance of some light precipitation on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, but with the snow level quite high, around 1,700 meters. However, a new active front will cross the Pyrenees on Sunday, bringing significant changes. Heavy snowfall is expected throughout the Pyrenees, and the snow level will drop, but this time it will likely remain above 1,000 meters. Temperatures will also fall, while showers are possible in several areas, especially in Barcelona and Girona. This situation remains uncertain and will need to be clarified.
