BarcelonaThe dana Alice The rain is relentless, and after Sunday's extraordinary downpours on the Ebro River, the rain has continued this Monday. There was a fair amount of respite in the morning, with only a few exceptions, but starting mid-morning, it began to rain heavily in the Valencian Community, especially on the southern coast of Valencia, where a red alert has been issued. More than 100 l/m² of precipitation has accumulated in several locations in the Safor and Ribera Baixa regions. Of particular note is the more than 135 l/m² accumulated in Gandía, of which 102 fell in just one hour. Rain is also falling again in Terres de l'Ebre, and precipitation will reach many other locations in the coming hours.
The storm will continue until dawn, with rainfall that could affect any area, but especially coastal and pre-coastal areas, as well as the northern third of the country. Once again, it could be torrential, so Meteocat's warnings for heavy rain remain in effect, and the Inuncat plan is in emergency phase. Tomorrow, the weather will be uneven, with irregular showers expected.
Strong storms in the next few hours
The irregular showers and thunderstorms that have picked up, especially in the south of the country in recent hours, will continue to affect many regions until dawn. Precipitation will fall especially in parts of the Catalan coast and pre-coast, moving from southwest to northeast. In many cases, they may be accompanied by thunderstorms and downpours, and will also fall irregularly in parts of central Catalonia, the eastern Pyrenees, and the Pre-Pyrenees. Meteocat maintains numerous alerts for heavy rain both today and tomorrow.
Showers and heavy storms are also expected in the Balearic Islands over the next few hours and into Tuesday morning, especially between the Pitiusas and Mallorca. However, the situation should improve starting tonight or later in the evening in the Ebro and the Valencian Community, where the heaviest rains will move away.
Tuesday: the weather continues to be busy
The weather will remain very unstable this Tuesday. Cloud cover will once again be abundant, especially along the coast and pre-coastline. Showers and some intense thunderstorms will continue throughout the morning in the northeastern regions, especially on the Costa Brava, with scattered showers and thunderstorms also being possible in the south. However, from midday until the evening or early morning, showers and thunderstorms will resume, becoming very irregular across virtually every part of the country. This will not be a situation of widespread rain, nor will it end in rain everywhere, but showers will fall here and there. Locally, these could be heavy, especially inland and in the south, which is why Meteocat maintains many alerts for intense rain.
The Valencian Community will have a calmer day, but scattered showers will recur in the afternoon, which, in principle, should not be significant. There will also be some intermittent showers and thunderstorms in the Balearic Islands. All this will be accompanied by a northerly wind, which will strengthen throughout the day in the Empordà and the Balearic Islands, as well as gregarious winds along the rest of the Catalan coast. Temperatures will remain at bay and similar to those of this Monday, or slightly lower. They will only rise in the Ebro and the Valencian Country, after so many days of downpours.
No clear end to instability in sight
Wednesday will be a calmer day, but with variable skies and a continued risk of some more localized showers. They will mainly affect inland areas and the Pre-Pyrenees. The anticyclone will remain firmly in place in the British Isles for a few days, allowing new fronts to reach our latitudes. Therefore, unstable conditions will remain, with a risk of new, irregular showers, but in principle nothing like the downpours of the last few hours.
Torrential Rainfall Summary
The downpours have been torrential in southern Catalonia, especially on Sunday, but the weekend's total accumulations are extraordinary, especially in Montsià. The Ràpita stands out, with 312 l/m², most of which fell in six hours on Sunday. Mas de Barberans also accumulated more than 280 l/m².2 in 48 hours. In the Els Ports Natural Park they add up to a total of 191 l/m2, in Aldover 140 and in Alfacs 170.
These figures may still increase in the coming hours. The intensity of the rains is notable, as, for example, in Mas de Barberans, 44 l/m² fell in just 30 minutes on Sunday. This amount of water in just a few hours swept everything away and caused severe flooding on Sunday in towns such as Godall and La Ràpita (Montsià), or the closure of the AP-7 (completely flooded) between Freginals and Ulldecona. After an extraordinarily rainy week in the Valencian Community, it rained again on Monday, exceeding 100 or 130 l/m² on the southern coast of Valencia, with renewed flooding. Torrential rainfall was recorded in La Safor, Ribera Baixa, Albufera, and Plana Baixa.
