At the gates of a radical weather change: snow, rain, and a notable thermal drop
The 18.9 ºC minimum on Friday at the Fabra Observatory in Barcelona is the highest value ever recorded in April in 112 years of data
BarcelonaTemperatures have remained quite stable this Saturday, again exceeding 30 °C in a week that has reminded us that summer is rapidly approaching. Nevertheless, in a few hours we will go from this feeling of advanced spring to one more typical of late winter, especially in high mountains, where it will snow again. The cause will be the passage of an Atlantic front and the entry of a clearly colder air mass, a situation that will cause showers and a significant drop in temperatures, which in some cases can be 10 or 15 °C compared to Friday and Saturday.
Sunday: radical change of weather
The passage of a front and the entry of a clearly colder air mass driven by a Mediterranean storm will cause a very sudden change in weather this Sunday. What we will notice most is a sharp drop in temperatures, which will be between 10 and 15 °C in inland areas and the Pyrenees. The decrease will be more moderate on the coast, where the mercury has not risen so much in recent days. We are talking about many maximums of 13 to 18 °C, nothing to do with the more than 30 °C of recent days. Clearly lower values in mountainous areas, where it will drop below zero degrees again after a week of positive values.
All of this with a sky very loaded with clouds and more instability. Showers are expected in practically any location, although until mid-afternoon they will only affect the western half and the Pyrenees, and as hours pass and during the night they will reach the east of the country. In fact, between Sunday night and Monday morning, the rain may sweep especially over the regions of Barcelona and Girona. In the Pyrenees, the snow line will drop from 1,600 to 1,200 m, but on the north face it can locally plummet to 800 m. The mistral and tramontana winds will gain strength in Empordà and the Ebro.
Monday: remnants of instability
The weather will still not be clear during the early hours of Monday: showers will fall in the eastern half of the country and there will be quite a few clouds everywhere. As the hours pass, however, the sun will gain ground in the south and west and the temperature will tend to rise, after a colder dawn than Sunday's. In the western Pyrenees there will still be snowfall, with a snowline that will rise to 1,100 or 1,300 meters in this sector of the mountain range.
