The best summer night

Some of the most special summer nights in Judit Neddermann's life have been at Palomares beach, in her hometown, Vilassar de Mar, during the main festival. The most memorable night of all is celebrated at the end of June with a popular sardine feast. “There are embers and everyone makes their own sardines, you have the drizzle of oil, garlic and parsley, and there is also burnt rum. People eat sitting on the beach with towels and sarongs, there is a concert of habaneras and the night says goodbye with a fireworks display. Everyone is happy and with that incipient early summer tan,” details the singer, and confesses: “I try to go every year, but sometimes concerts come up and I can't. It's one of the few nights that if a concert comes up, I feel bad, because I regret missing it.”

She ensures that she enjoys the summer a lot, much more than winter. "I am cold-intolerant and winter overwhelms and saddens me. I like summer because I play many concerts and it makes me very happy. I like to go up and down and be in contact with the public. My family and friends are also in Vilassar on free days and we see each other more often. We have the beach right in front of us, we go for a drink in the village or at a beach bar and we spend hours there," explains Neddermann, who the only thing she would eliminate from summer are mosquitoes: "I can't stand them at all."

When she can, she escapes to Cadaqués or Aragon, which is where her grandmother's family lives. She usually takes long trips in the low season, between November and January, when the pace of concerts slows down. "I already like to go against the grain," she assures.

She remembers her childhood summers "wonderfully well". "My grandparents were from Guinardó and we rented a shared house in Vilassar de Mar. They were summers of relaxation, of watching Plats bruts on TV, of eating very well, of taking long naps and going to the beach. From that time I remember a great feeling of well-being," she says.

When she became a teenager, summers changed quite a bit. "The only thing I wanted to do was go out with friends, we no longer wanted to stay in our families' homes. We met to make music and we spent many hours in the village squares, chatting and laughing. It was also the time of first times, first parties, first drunken nights... Teenage summers are the time when you discover everything," says the singer, who will always find in summer nights "the wonderful feeling that anything can happen."
