Finding the love of your life with a "Wanted" poster
This is how actress Carol Muakuku met Joan.
Actress Carol Muakuku explains that at the time she was doing castings, a common profile that was presented to her was that of a "black girl and flirt for a Cuban rum ad." "Nothing could be further from the truth: I've only had one boyfriend and he's been my lifelong boyfriend," she says. "I'm completely unique, I'm not your typical Catalan... A black girl from the Les Corts neighborhood, I've been different since I was little," she explains. She's never been one for flirting at the discotheques.
"When I was studying biology, a friend encouraged me to join a university theater group. We had prepared a musical and two days before the premiere the pianist let us down. We put up posters ofWanted through the university and he showed up. Just him, Joan," the actress recalls. Carol liked him immediately. "I did have to go through a casting, I think, because there were a lot of girls in the group and they were all fantastic. Juan was someone new and mysterious. The mystery of someone very different attracted me. He's very calm and I'm a lively little thing."
There were several Mallorcan actors in the theater group, and thanks to that, they performed several gigs in Mallorca. "There I saw that I wasn't just attracted to him; I really liked him. He had a great sense of humor, and we could talk about anything. Even now, sometimes we go to bed very late because we stay up talking until the wee hours of the night. My friends already know that everything they tell me, they also know."
Carol says that sharing her life with Joan has driven her to do "what I really wanted to do." "I was studying biology, but what I liked was theater, and it was he who told me to drop out and go to the Institut del Teatre. Now I've set up a theater school in Les Corts, and it was he who also told me: 'If you want to do this, I'll help you and accompany you.' I'm very afraid of being alone. I work so I don't get stuck, and that's why I also take great care of my friends: they're my family."
In fact, he still maintains that group of friends where he met Joan. "I have African roots, from Equatorial Guinea, and I'm very wild and untamable. Joan's love led me to the Catalan trial, and I brought a little more daring to him. Let's make a good team," he concludes.
