Vitor Reis makes Ter Stegen happy on his Girona debut
Just when they least expected it, Míchel's team salvaged a point and remains undefeated in 2026
GironaJust when they least expected it, Girona escaped defeat with an epic goal from Vitor Reis in stoppage time. Getafe had infuriated the Montilivi crowd, who were angry with the refereeing decisions, their opponents, and the world. Luckily, the center-back appeared, courageously finishing off a ball that extends Girona's unbeaten run into 2026, and Ter Stegen prevented a 1-2 scoreline in the final moments. Relegation remains a distant memory, four points away.
All eyes turned to the new signings, especially the German goalkeeper. At Montilivi, they were amazed: everyone was taking pictures of him and pointing, saying, "Yes, that's him, it's Ter Stegen." The goalkeeper looked very comfortable, keeping things simple with the ball at his feet and even venturing into attacking plays, like a classic assist. quarterbarck towards Bryan Gil, who almost got past Vanat. His presence alone provided extra security and authority. Gazzaniga, resigned, also watched him from the bench. "What choice do I have?" he seemed to think. He wasn't at fault for the goal, and he made a last-minute save.
Fran Beltrán also didn't look out of place in a Girona side that danced to his tune. The midfielder is intense, and he was also seen switching the point of attack, a tactic that Míchel had lost with the departures of Aleix Garcia and, more recently, Arthur. The Girona team, boosted by recent results, didn't play badly, but it was like banging their heads against a wall time and time again. Bordalás's wall isn't easily breached. The third debutant, Echeverri, came on at a disadvantage to try and shake things up, but he didn't amount to much more than good intentions.
Refereeing desperation
The closest anyone came to scoring early on was Lemar, with a shot that rattled the crossbar in the first half. All the real danger came from there, in fact, like a Vitor Reis effort that forced Soria into a flying save. But Girona struggled, and the more the game progressed, the more frustrated they looked, aided by Alejandro Quintero, a referee completely incapable of applying any common sense to the numerous fouls and time-wasting by the visitors. At one point, the game became unnecessarily rushed, as if every play were the decisive one. Getafe, patient, were starting to get the game under control. And in an absurd recovery and four touches, the Madrid side wove together the perfect strategy, capitalized on by Vázquez, who finished from point-blank range past Ter Stegen. Then there was confusion, because Girona hadn't been chasing anyone for days. Then Vitor Reis appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, to score a brilliant point, aided by the German goalkeeper's decisive save. Montilivi ended up chanting "Referee, you're awful!" because he had a disastrous performance.
