The L'Hospitalet coach resigns after a fan assaulted his father during a match
A new episode of violence in football leads to the former player resigning from his position
BarcelonaViolence has once again marred a football match. This time, the team affected was CE L'Hospitalet. They had been experiencing a string of difficult results for several weeks, and fans had serious doubts about their style of play, but frustration, nerves, or unease are no justification for aggression. Their coach, Cristian Gómez, was forced to leave the bench after witnessing his family's safety being compromised during an official match.
Last Sunday, the L'Hospitalet club hosted L'Escala. The fourth and sixth-placed teams faced off in a match that ended disastrously for the home side, who lost by a clear 1-3. The poor result led the home fans to begin hurling insults at both the players and the coaching staff. In an act of solidarity with his son, Cristian's father, who was among the spectators, stood up to intervene in the barrage of insults. This led to a fan, driven by anger and frustration, grabbing him by the neck and causing a violent incident in the stands of the municipal stadium.
After the match, Cristian didn't want to let the incident go unpunished and made a statement clearly expressing his rejection and disappointment with the fans' behavior. "I'm not going to allow my family to be present and for this kind of thing to happen. Since this isn't covered in my contract, I'll speak with the president or whoever is responsible. I have no problem stepping down if this was my fault," declared the now former CE L'Hospitalet coach. Hours after the match ended, the club officially announced that Cristian Gómez had decided to resign as the club's coach.
The club from L'Hospitalet refused to remain silent on the matter and published a statement condemning the events and expressing its complete rejection of this type of behavior and attitude. "Our club defends football as a space for coexistence, respect, and sporting values. Attitudes of this kind do not represent our fans or the principles we promote on and off the field. The club condemns any form of verbal violence, discrimination, or disrespect, and above all, crossing the line into physical aggression," the statement read. "In light of these events, and by mutual agreement between the club and Cristian Gómez, it has been decided to end his tenure as first-team coach. Cristian Gómez will always have the support, affection, and admiration of all of L'Hospitalet, as he has consistently embodied the values of the club. CE L'Hospitalet is already working on finding a replacement," it concluded.
