Scandal in the trial for Maradona's death: medical evidence from the father was used as if it were from the player

The case, which studies if involuntary homicide was committed with the player, is stopped for a few days

BarcelonaThe trial for the death of former Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona could be postponed for a few days due to a supposed mix-up with the results of kidney analyses, which would correspond to his father, according to Argentine media reports. The death of the former Napoli, Barça, and Boca Juniors player has become a media spectacle that attracts the attention of the Argentine public, who adored the player and are now seeing the details of the star's final years, during which he was not well cared for when he was ill, come to light.

The information indicates that the results of the tests, which actually belonged to his father, were mistakenly attributed to Maradona, who died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020. Maradona's father, also named Diego, died in 2015. The court has ordered the seizure of the original medical records to clarify what happened and, for the moment, the trial is halted.

Justice has opened an investigation into the health company Swiss Medical for delivering medical results of the star's father. The court overseeing the trial for the former footballer's death has ordered the opening of an investigation "in order to determine how this documentation was obtained, identified, sent, and incorporated into the proceedings, as well as any responsibilities that may correspond." The judges have also ordered the confiscation of more information from the administrative headquarters of Swiss Medical and its Los Arcos clinic, where the star's father was admitted, with the aim of "determining which of the records duly incorporated actually correspond to Diego Armando Maradona and which do not." Last Tuesday, the lawyer for the care coordinator of Swiss Medical, Nancy Forlini, revealed that the Medical Board created in 2021 to study the circumstances of the star's death had taken into account studies of the star's father, Diego Maradona.

A media case

Maradona underwent brain surgery a few weeks before his death. The prosecution accuses Maradona's personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque; his psychiatrist, Agustina Cossachov; a psychologist; another doctor; the medical coordinator of the health insurer; and two caregivers of involuntary manslaughter. All defendants deny the charges.

Investigators believe serious errors were made in the home care of the 1986 Mexico World Cup champion. The case had to be restarted after the first trial was declared null and void last May after 21 days. The proceedings were interrupted after one of the three judges on the court was suspended for her participation in an unauthorized documentary about the trial.
