"I've had five sips of Jägermeister and between 10 and 12 beers": British skier finishes race completely drunk
Gabriel Gledhill accepted several alcoholic drinks offered to him by fans during the 50km cross-country skiing World Cup race in Oslo.
BarcelonaGabriel Gledhill, a 23-year-old British skier, has become the surprising star of the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup for an astonishing reason. The Englishman recently completed the 50km race completely drunk. Throughout the course, he accepted beers offered to him by spectators, which helped him finish in 67th place.
The skier made no attempt to hide it and, after the race, readily admitted what he had done. "I probably had five sips of Jägermeister and between 10 and 12 beers. I was offered quite a lot of alcohol during the race and ended up pretty drunk, but it was a lot of fun," he told local media, acknowledging that he was still under the influence. Besides the drinks, he was also offered snusIt's a moist, chewable tobacco, very typical of Nordic countries. The most critical moment of the race came when he mistakenly drank mouthwash, thinking it was another beverage. This caused him to vomit for a good part of the race. However, he managed to finish.
His behavior during the competition generated considerable criticism. And since he was overtaken by several participants in the women's race, which started later, he was accused of not having the appropriate attitude for such an important competition as the World Cup. However, the Englishman defended himself, claiming that he didn't obstruct any of his competitors and didn't disrupt the race. Far from imposing a sanction, the World Cup organization reacted humorously to the incident, even sharing a video on their social media of the skier with a beer, highlighting his personality and the significant media impact he has had on this still relatively niche sport.
