Barça capitalizes on Araujo's goal to get closer to the league title
Without much flair against a more energetic Rayo, the Blaugrana win (1-0) and remain undefeated at the Camp Nou thanks to Joan Garcia's saves
BarcelonaWithout flair, but with a goal from a set piece. Without sparkle, but with pragmatism (and survival). Barça had enough with a good spell of attacking intent in the first half and the saves of their goalkeeping treasure, Joan Garcia, to overcome (1-0) a Rayo Vallecano side that showed more energy than the Blaugrana. Hansi Flick's men made the most of Ronald Araujo's goal from a corner to secure the three points with nine matchdays remaining in La Liga, thus adding pressure to Real Madrid, who host Atlético de Madrid tonight (9 pm).
A hard-fought victory, with a tense finish, for a tired Barça against a mischievous and courageous opponent at the Camp Nou. True to their attacking style, the Madrid side thrives on the spur of the moment, and they came very close to turning the stadium upside down right from the start with a run down the left flank by Catalan Pep Chavarría. The Figueres native reached the byline and delivered a cutback to Carlos Martín, who looked destined to score, but Joan Garcia made a spectacular save with his left arm. A wake-up call for a Barça side that started sluggishly, lacking the intensity of a Rayo Vallecano team that pressed high. The first real chance for the Blaugrana came in the 10th minute. Gerard Martín, who continues to solidify his place in the center alongside Pau Cubarsí, feinted past two defenders with a clever move and approached the edge of the box to unleash a shot that Augusto Batalla dealt with comfortably.
Barça needed to wake up, and they did. After Gerard's warning, Raphinha produced a moment of brilliance. With Rayo's defense pushed high, Pathé Ciss lost his focus, and the Brazilian caught him out of position. Raphinha surged forward, finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot went wide. The former Leeds player wasn't quite sure what to do, and he took advantage of a scare involving Joan, who required medical attention, to go to the sidelines and change his boots, hoping it would improve his aim. The Brazilian, with his runs off the ball, was one of the most active players for a Barça side that appealed for a non-existent penalty against Lamine Yamal and came alive in time with Fermín's high-energy performance.
Ronald Araujo opens the scoring
Raphinha came close to scoring again, this time with a cross from Lamine Yamal, but his shot was weak. However, the effort forced Batalla to clear the ball from a corner, which proved decisive. A delicate cross from Cancelo and a lapse in concentration, the kind that gets featured in the season's most egregious errors. The goalkeeper came out to catch who knows what, and the ball sailed over him and went straight to the head of Araujo, who used his 1.90 meters to outjump Ciss and send the ball into the back of the net. The Blaugrana almost doubled their lead with a venomous shot from Raphinha that was denied by the Rayo goalkeeper and the crossbar. Despite the improvement from the start of the match, the decisive goal remained elusive. Rayo managed to win a couple of corners before halftime, forcing the defense to work hard, with Cubarsi increasingly establishing himself as a leader and looking more impressive at just nineteen years old. In attack, Robert Lewandowski started again, but was substituted at halftime after a lackluster performance.
After a first half that was more hard-fought than brilliant, Rayo Vallecano emerged from the tunnel making it clear to Barça that a home victory was far from guaranteed. Rayo, tenacious and persistent, didn't allow the Blaugrana to settle in, though they calmly tried to regain their rhythm. Lamine Yamal was the first to break the ice, leaving Ciss behind with a superb first-touch control and driving into the box. However, with little angle, his shot was poor. Little by little, Barça began to push forward into the opposition's area. Shortly after Lamine Yamal's solo foray, Ferran Torres tried his luck with a cross-shot that Raphinha narrowly missed, followed by Fermín with a weak effort. The Andalusian was one of his team's best players, but Flick heeded the advice of...Excel With the playing time, it took its toll on him around the hour mark. Olmo and Casadó joined the cause, replacing a tired Bernal, who left the game clutching his thigh.
A second half of survival
He also made a change, bringing on Íñigo Pérez, and the substitutions benefited Rayo, who almost equalized just as Barça had opened the scoring: from a corner. While Batalla had been wasteful in the first half, Joan was key in denying Unai a goal, with a well-placed header at the near post after Casadó had opened up his marking. The second half became a nightmare for Barça. The game was even briefly stopped because Cordero Vega heard a whistle in the stands, which could have interfered with play.
The Blaugrana, tired and lacking ideas, were content to simply survive the final minutes. Not without a few scares, such as Espino's one-on-one chance, which demonstrated why he's a defender and not an attacker. With everything in his favor for the finish – Cubarsí and Gerard were effectively cutting off his passing lanes – he sent a dreadful shot over the crossbar. Barça were tired and Rayo smelled blood. Cancelo was exhausted and the Madrid side had found a highway to exploit.
Nervousness gripped the stadium, while Joan once again saved his team with a great save from De Frutos. All that remained was to hold on, with Rayo throwing everything forward and Barça fighting for survival. The final whistle was a balm.
