CAST
The transformation of the energy system is opening up new technological opportunities, but it also poses complex challenges, such as adapting the grid to a greater integration of renewables, managing the increase in electrification and the needs for flexibility and storage, and facilitating the transformation of innovations into scalable solutions that reach the market.
These challenges have been the focus of a new edition of the Energy Innovation Day, which has brought together professionals from the business, industrial, scientific, and financial sectors, as well as start-ups, spin-offs and representatives of the administration, at the Barcelona Activa Technology Park.
Co-organized by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), the Energy Efficient Cluster of Catalonia (CEEC) and the R&D&I Network Energy for Society (XRE4S), with the sponsorship of the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), the event aims to bring research and technology closer to companies, give visibility to new solutions, and foster collaborations that boost their development and commercialization.
A more resilient and flexible grid
The integration of renewables, the increase in electrification, and storage needs are transforming the planning and operation of the electrical grid. In this context, experts from IREC, Upcell Alliance, and Bamboo Energy, together with Estabanell, have analyzed how new technologies and management models can strengthen its resilience and facilitate the integration of new energy resources. The opening presentation, by olivoENERGY, completed the vision regarding the challenges and opportunities of the sector.
The ability to transform technological developments into companies and scalable solutions has been one of the central themes of the event. Representatives from BStartup10, Norrsken Hub Barcelona, TetraxAI, and Mobile World Capital debated investment criteria and the financing needs of innovative energy companies, highlighting the importance of strengthening connections between research, start-ups, spin-offs, companies, and investors so that technologies can reach the market.
In this vein, the 2026 edition incorporated an energy investment forum for the first time, a space to bring innovative projects closer to investors specialized in technology, entrepreneurship, and venture capital. Six start-ups, spin-offs, and business projects –OXHYD, INDRESMAT, GridWatch, X1 Wind, Biyiud, and Plug:chain– presented their solutions before representatives from Mobile World Capital, imec.istart, and BStartup10.
The proposals reflected the diversity of energy innovation, with solutions ranging from fuel cells and green hydrogen production to new materials to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, tools to strengthen grid resilience, floating offshore wind, solutions for smart cities, and new uses for renewable energies.
Connecting knowledge, business, and capital
The Energy Innovation Day reinforces its role as a meeting point for the agents that make energy innovation possible. Research provides knowledge and technology; companies, industrialization capacity and market access; the administration, a favorable framework for deployment; and investors, the resources to drive growth. The goal is to accelerate the transfer of knowledge and the implementation of new solutions and contribute to the transformation of the energy system.
